The entire Buddhist wisdom teaching is summarized in the format of the Four Noble Truths'. 1) the truth of stress and suffering 2) the cause of stress 3) the ending of all stress and suffering 4) the path leading to liberation and end of suffering. These universal truths are realized directly by the awakened noble disciples.

“Because of not seeing as it really is the Four Noble Truths
we have run along for a long time through various births.
Now these have been seen, uprooted is what leads to rebirth,
the root of suffering has been cut off, there is no continuation in existence.”

“Such is virtue, such is concentration, such is wisdom, when virtue is well-developed it yields great fruit and brings great advantages in regard to concentration, when concentration is well-developed it yields great fruit and brings great advantages in regard to wisdom,

when wisdom is well-developed the mind is completely liberated from the pollutants, that is to say: the pollutant of sensuality, the pollutant of craving for continued existence, the pollutant of ignorance.”

“Because of a lack of understanding and a lack of pe*******on of Four Noble Truths both you and I have been wandering and running along in Saṃsāra (confused wandering) for a (very) long time." - Buddha, Mahaparinibbana Sutta,, Translation by Sujato.

This long talk by Ven.Swaminwahansa give the deeper context for Dhamma education for happiness in samsara. Instead of chasing myriad things our mind wants or we have been socially conditioned to believe and follow, there is another way to truth. I was surprised to know in Sri Lanka there are 20 million people but only 20,000 monks. Many stay trapped in conventional life and don't hear the call of dhamma. My own father wanted to follow but his health deteriorated in late forties and he died within six months of early retirement at age 57. I did not want that for me. His death plus my disillusionment with first job in the US in a toxic environment was a wake up call for me. Glad I listened so now I can guide others (especially women and immigrants) to mindfully living a life of meaning, purpose, joy and freedom. It is possible even as a lay practitioner to awaken with ease.

A step-by-step, practical guide to achieve the ultimate bliss of Nibbāna.These English dhamma talks are held every Sunday from 8.30 to 10.30 AM at Gateway Co...

What is the Buddhist view of depression? Here is my short answer.

The Buddhist view of depression would fall under the broad general category of ‘Dukkha’ or human existential suffering, especially mental-emotional pain and suffering. No one born as a human being escapes physical suffering of birth, sickness, aging, old age and death. And there is the unseen mental suffering from separation and loss of loved ones or pleasant things and contact of senses with unpleasant things and people. Unconscious attachment with pleasant things and aversion of unpleasant people makes our mind feel trapped into feelings of sadness, loneliness and despair, and discontent.

Mindfulness helps us to relax these attachments and turn our senses inward by gradually developing wise attention of breath-body-mind-behavior. Mindfulness tools like RAIN helps transform our unskillful mental habits to wholesome skillful ones. Depression can hit even the most balanced and calm people due to sudden change in environment, health or relationship. Viparinama dukkha (suffering of unexpected change or consequence) is addressed by insight meditation or vipassana. Good news is: There is a way out of suffering, may you discover and realize it 🧡
