The Campo Fire Department would like to say thank you to all of the local, county, state, and federal agencies that came together to help protect Campo during the fire on Sunday. When things got tough, departments and crews from all over stepped up without hesitation, and we are incredibly grateful for the support.

We also want to thank the state resources, Forest Service crews, and contracted fire agencies that have stayed in the area throughout the week taking fire calls and working the fire perimeter. Your help has given our Baca County departments a much needed break after several long days on the fire line.

These fires remind us what can happen when people and agencies work together for one common goal…. protecting our communities. Thank you to everyone who has helped in any way. We truly appreciate it.

Friends, we’ve been thinking all day about the perfect words to say in this post and we probably aren’t going to get these quite right even now. But after this week, we’re honestly not sure there are any words to really express the depth of feeling in our gratitude. When we have the advantage of a few more days in the rear view, maybe we’ll get closer. Until then, all we can say is thank you.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. To every individual, volunteer, and agency involved in this week’s response at every level — thank you.

We’re in awe.

5/14/26 23:52 Per CDOT, 287/385 has reopened. Please use caution as emergency crews are still present in the area and do not attempt to follow GPS down dirt roads around previous roadblocks.

5/14/26 23:31 Update: As containment grows, our crews are slowly beginning to be released from scene at the fires in southern Baca County and northern Cimarron County. Thanks never seems like enough, but we are so so grateful for all our responders from here and neighboring counties for working so hard to protect our communities.

Please note: There will likely be lingering smoke in the area for a time due to these local fire mop-ups as well as those in Oklahoma and Kansas. We are also still under a fire weather watch and there is a LOT of dry fuel out there. Stay weather aware, make sure your emergency alerts are on, and report any fires you observe to 911 immediately!

Multiple fires this evening in the southern part of the county, several already under control, but crews remain on scene of the C&36 fire which is still moving north. Multiple departments from our county and surrounding on scene. Stay aware and avoid the area for the safety of crews and residents.

As of 5/14/26 at 19:45

There are no active evacuation orders in Baca County but residences from the Oklahoma state line to Baca County Road M between roads 44 and 30 in particular should be on alert for possible evacuation. Winds are projected to be erratic this evening which could quickly change fire path.

Highway 287/385 southbound from Springfield is closed to the Texas state line due to decreased visibility from wildfires to the south in Oklahoma as well. Check cotrip.org/maps for latest road information. (5/14/26 20:09).

We are under both a red flag warning and a high wind warning. There is a LOT of dry tinder right now. This is critical fire weather and there might also be a lot of dust. Pay attention to the conditions. Don’t do dumb…stuff. Don’t even think the word “spark”.

Parking or driving on tall grass is a terrible idea. Keep those cigarette butts where they belong. Check those trailer chains. Don’t drive if you can’t see the road. Secure that trampoline in the backyard. Maybe just stay home altogether. Have a way (or two) to get emergency alerts. And it’s never a bad idea to make sure your important devices are charged and have backups should we have a power outage. Call 911 only for emergencies.

Make good choices. Future you will thank you.
