Understanding Child Trauma: Acute, Chronic, and Complex
Every child responds to trauma differently. What may feel overwhelming for one child might not affect another the same way. Trauma can result from a single event, repeated stress, or ongoing harm—sometimes even from those a child trusts most. Recognizing these experiences helps caregivers, educators, and providers respond with the right kind of support.

Acute Trauma is the result of a single distressing event, such as an accident, natural disaster, or act of violence.

Chronic Trauma develops from repeated or ongoing exposure to harmful situations, like bullying, racism, or community violence.

Complex Trauma comes from repeated, often interpersonal harm early in life, such as abuse, neglect, or witnessing violence.

Understanding the difference between these types of trauma helps families and providers recognize the lasting impact on children and offer appropriate, trauma-informed care.

The Hope Initiative: Supporting Survivors
Hope Initiative, part of Mountain Comprehensive Care Center’s Healing Program, is committed to helping children and adolescents heal from trauma. Through education, counseling, therapy, and advocacy, we address emotional impacts such as anger, anxiety, fear, and grief.

We love seeing young people take bold steps toward their future—and one of our ClubHouse members just did something amazing! 🙌 In his own words, he shared how the friendships, support, and opportunities he’s found at Mountain Comprehensive Care Center’s ClubHouse Youth Drop-In Program have helped him grow and prepare for what’s next.

Now, he’s heading off to college! 🎓💙

Programs like The ClubHouse are doing incredible work to empower youth—helping them build confidence, explore their interests, and discover new possibilities. We have several ClubHouse locations, each a welcoming space where all youth are encouraged to connect, learn, and dream big—no matter their situation.
