Sleep, like eating habits and physical activity, is important for the health and well-being of parents and their children. When children don’t get enough sleep it can negatively affect other areas of life, such as behavior in school, grades, or relationships with parents. Although sleep needs vary from person to person, most adults need between seven and eight hours of sleep a day and children, depending on their age, need nine to 12 hours. Unfortunately, parents and children often do not get enough sleep.

The home environment plays an important role in children’s sleep habits. Some children do not have the best sleep environments, which may keep them from getting enough sleep. For example, children may sleep in places that are “too loud,” “too bright,” or “too cold.” At times, they may have to share a bedroom with people who sleep or wake up at different times. Having a television or computer in their bedroom can also lead to irregular sleep.

Use these tips to help you and your child sleep better!

Fainting (also known as syncope) is common, particularly in teenagers. Though it can be a frightening event, the common faint lasts just seconds and is typically not a sign of a dangerous problem. The bigger concern is avoiding injury during a fall. Knowing the difference between a potentially dangerous faint and the more common, benign faint may seem intimidating, but there are clues that can help guide a family or provider to seek additional help and evaluation. See post for more details!

Counterfeit pills can appear as pharmaceutical pills but often contain illegally made fentanyl, benzodiazepines, or other drugs.

Reduce your risk:
- By being aware that pills bought illegally might contain highly potent drugs.
- By using fentanyl test strips (fts), to detect the presence of fentanyl in all different kinds of drugs and drug forms.
- By only taking pills that have been prescribed to you.

Recovery from substance use disorders is possible—it's okay to ask for help. Find treatment options near you by visiting findtreatment.gov or by calling the 24/7, national helpline at 800-662-HELP (4357).

Jennifer Anderson from Kids Eat in Color finds the *number one* reason that parents start pressuring their toddler at mealtime is that they are worried that their toddler isn’t eating enough. They think their toddler should be eating more.

The amount kids need to eat varies so much! But it can be normal for them to eat less than they did as a baby AND it can be normal for them to eat as much as you! Eating a lot or a little is very common and we don’t need to pressure them to eat a different amount - give them the space to choose whether to eat a lot or a little.

Pressuring kids to eat more (or less), can make it more difficult to hear their own hunger and fullness feelings. These feelings are important for us to be able to hear at any age—and we can help them notice these feelings as they get older by letting them choose how much to eat.

📢 The American Academy of Sleep Medicine () issued a position statement emphasizing the clinical significance of and its impact on performance, health, mood, safety, and quality of life.

🚨 Sleepiness affects more than just energy levels. It’s linked to impaired cognitive performance, mood disturbances, and increased risk of accidents. Sleepiness is also a major sign of sleep disorders like sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and idiopathic hypersomnia.

💙 Thank you to the AASM for bringing attention to sleepiness! Recognizing and treating sleepiness as a serious health issue is a powerful step forward for public health and well-being.

To be able to identify a reading problem in their child, parents need to have a sense of the milestones of early literacy. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s literacy development, talk with your child’s doctor, teacher, or a speech and language specialist. The sooner your child gets the help they need, the easier it will be for your child to learn.
