Giving Back: HWS College Experience Rings the Bell for Salvation Army

In November, the Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS) College Experience Program students demonstrated outstanding commitment to community service by volunteering their time to ring the bell for the Salvation Army at Walmart.

The students performed a wonderful job, engaging with community members and embodying the spirit of the season. They confidently introduced themselves, extended heartfelt thanks to those who generously donated, and wished shoppers a warm and Happy Thanksgiving.

This hands-on volunteering opportunity not only supports a vital cause but also provides the College Experience participants with valuable social and communication skills in a public setting.

Great job, HWS College Experience Program—your hard work and enthusiasm made a real difference!

Employees return and stay at The Arc Ontario for various reasons, whether it’s our flexible schedules, unsurpassed benefits or the fulfilling feeling they are making a difference every day. Melissa, one of our LPN's returned recently and we're so glad to have her back. Here is what she had to say about working for The Arc Ontario...

"While attending nursing school I received a lot of support from my co-workers and supervisors. The most notable, when I graduated and opted to spread my wings in other areas of nursing I had the agencies full support then as well as now. The Arc Ontario has always supported my goals even when I had to leave to further them, and that's a huge reason I decided to return. Working here I feel like a person and not a number."

❤️ Inclusive Learning: CPR Certification

The College Experience Program had the opportunity to partake in a CPR training course in November.

Hobart and William Smith student Ethan conducted a special CPR course right here on campus. As a thoughtful initiative stemming from his developmental disabilities class with Diana Baker, Ethan designed an inclusive CPR course specifically for individuals with disabilities. This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to receive specialized instruction and even earn a CPR certification valid for one year! We were thrilled to support Ethan’s project and are so grateful for the time he shared.

The Arc Ontario was grateful to gather to recognize our employees who are celebrating employment milestones with our agency at our annual Service Awards Breakfast on December 3rd at Clifton Springs Country Club. Service awards are given to staff at their 5th anniversary and increase by 5-year increments to celebrate our employee’s dedication and commitment to our agency and the people we support. The ceremony was led by our executive director, John Astles, and Board President, Patrick Boyle.

This year we were especially proud to celebrate JoEllen Schaefer, who has been an integral part of The Arc Ontario for 40 years!

Every person celebrating a service milestone started their journey the same way – by applying for an open position within our agency. If you or someone you know are interested in joining our spectacular group of staff, please visit https://www.thearcontario.org/careers.

A Milestone of Inclusion: The Arc Ontario and Hobart and William Smith Colleges Celebrate 20 Years of Partnership!

We proudly celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the College Experience partnership with Hobart and William Smith Colleges this year, marking two decades of providing life-changing educational and vocational opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The celebration took place on Thursday, November 14th, bringing together students, participants, dedicated faculty, and staff from both organizations for an evening of shared accomplishment and fun. The upbeat music, by our very own, Dapper Rats kept the energy high, ensuring everyone had a wonderful time recognizing the success and growth of the program.

Since its inception, the College Experience has been a beacon of inclusion, offering participants access to college amenities, audited classes, extracurricular activities, and crucial job development skills, fostering independence and community involvement.

This celebration is a powerful testament to the unwavering commitment of The Arc Ontario and HWS to building a more inclusive and supportive community, and we look forward to many more years of collaboration.

What a morning! ☀️🦃

Last Thursday, over 700 neighbors, friends, and families registered to gather at F.A. Baker Memorial Park to kick off Thanksgiving the Canandaigua way—together, with laughter, cold noses, and the best community spirit you could ask for.

Sixteen years ago, just 65 people showed up for the very first Turkey Trot. Now we can't stop smiling thinking about the over 700 folks who decided to join us... Not because we're chasing records, but because this tradition has become something truly special—a morning where everyone belongs, where community gathers, whether you're running your fastest 5K or taking a leisurely stroll with your dog.

Thank you for making this event what it is. Thank you to our sponsors for supporting this beautiful tradition. And thank you for showing us what community really looks like.

Same time next year? 💙
