The Center at Heron Hill is a premier setting for the practice of Ecotherapy and Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy. Ecotherapy combines counseling activities that would be done indoors with the healing power of the outdoors and the natural world. There is much research evidence about the health benefits associated with access to and experiences of green spaces. These could be "nearby nature," like the
meadows, gardens and forested paths of Heron Hill, and also more rugged or wild places like national forests, the ocean shore, or the mountains. Depending on the person, the challenge of outdoor sports, adventure, and landscape restoration can also be therapeutic, both physically and mentally. Finally, many people find that the sense of being away in nature encourages peacefulness, self-reflection and a sense of wonder. So, for ecotherapy, we can think of "Vitamin E" the health benefits associated with the natural environment, "Vitamin A" outdoor adventure, and "Vitamin M" finding meaning in life. Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) utilizes horses experientially in the therapy process as partners to the treatment team and as catalysts for change and emotional growth. Horses, as prey animals, have a highly attuned ability to sense and respond to emotion as a means for survival and thus they become mirrors for us in the therapy process as they reflect our inner most feelings, whether those feelings are recognized by us or not. This can be a powerful tool in getting to the root of emotional problems quickly. Additionally, EAP Sessions take place in an outdoor barn/arena setting and are experiential in nature, thus emphasis is placed on action and doing rather than talking as in traditional "talk therapies". The experiential element of EAP allows clients to find their own solutions to problems through experimentation thus also building on problem solving and communication skills. Research shows that learning occurs at highest retention through experiencing far over seeing, hearing/talking and reading.
