Grateful Ed’s Newsletter for the New Year, Vol.2025, Issue 1
As we step into the very futuristic sounding 2025 (at least to me), I want to invite you to take a moment to reflect on the transitions this season symbolizes. January derives its name from Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, transitions, and duality. Depicted with two faces—one looking to the past and the other to the future—Janus invites us to pause, reflect on where we’ve been, and envision the path ahead. His symbolism resonates deeply with the process of growth and transformation, both personally and professionally.
Reflection on the Past Year:
The past year has undoubtedly brought its share of challenges and triumphs. The closing months of 2024 were tumultuous for many in the Southeastern US as large numbers of us experienced devastating hurricane damage and disruption to our lives. Then the entire nation endured a highly contentious election that further fueled the divide within the country. Every year provides us with many opportunities to examine, reflect, and learn about ourselves as we react and respond to life events, and this one was no different and possibly even particularly so. As Janus reminds us, reflection is not about dwelling on the past but learning from it. What moments stand out to you? Perhaps it was a lesson learned from adversity or a small victory that carried great meaning. Take a moment to honor these experiences—they are the foundation for what lies ahead.
Looking Ahead:
Janus also teaches us the power of intention, and modern neuroscience confirms its potency. By looking forward with clarity, we can shape our reality. As you think about the coming year, consider:
What do you want to carry forward from 2024?
What habits, mindsets, or goals will you leave behind?
What small, actionable steps can you take to align with your values and aspirations?
Being mindfully deliberate with endeavors like these can be so much more beneficial than just listing resolutions, which I have learned from both personal experience and scientific research, seldom make it past the second Friday of January – the so-called “quitter’s day.”
Practical Tips for 2025:
To start the year with intention, here are a few simple practices:
Morning Reflection: Dedicate 5 minutes each morning to review your intentions for the day. (If you feel like you’re too busy for 5 minutes of reflection, you should do 10 minutes.)
Gratitude Practice: End each day by noting three things you’re grateful for, and try to find new things each day. Gratitude is the antidote for depression.
Mindful Breathing: Use moments of stillness throughout the day to center yourself and reconnect with your goals. Even just three slow breaths at times during the day can be highly beneficial.
Closing:
As we embrace 2025, I want to thank each of you for the privilege of connection and growth we’ve shared. Whether through our previous work together or in shared conversations, your resilience and insights inspire me. Here’s to a year of reflection, intention, and meaningful progress. May Janus and our personal spiritual figures guide us as we navigate the transitions of life with courage, compassion, and hope.
Warm wishes for a joyous, peaceful, and meaningful 2025.
