Measles continues to spread due to holiday travel and lower vaccination rates.

Symptoms of measles appear 7 to 14 days after exposure and include: high fever, cough, congestion, a rash that begins on the forehead and spreads to the feet, red, watery eyes, and headache.

Akron Children's continues to monitor this closely and we are here to help answer your questions. If your child needs to be seen for measles either at a pediatrics office or at our Urgent Care or Emergency Room, call ahead and let the staff know. They’ll tell you what to do when you arrive.

AUDITIONS THIS MONDAY AND TUESDAY!
The Youngstown Playhouse and Youth Theatre announces auditions for the second Youth Theatre production, the musical HONK, Jr. with music by George Stiles and book and lyrics by Anthony Drewe. Directed by Wayne Bonner III, auditions will take place Monday, December 8 and Tuesday December 9 from 5:30 pm. – 7:30 pm., at the Youngstown Playhouse. We will host callbacks Thursday, December 11 from 5:50 – 7:30 pm.
The cast size is flexible- up to 24 actors - anyone interested is welcome to come out! We're looking for all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. Children and teens ages 6 years and up with strong acting and singing skills are needed. Auditioners please prepare a song of your choice that best shows your vocal ability. You may sing a ca****la or bring sheet music for our accompanist.
There will be a dance call as part of the audition process. We will be casting adults for Penny’s Mom and Dad. The Bullfrog role is already cast.
Based on the beloved fable The Ugly Duckling, and adapted for young performers, with a score by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe (Mary Poppins), Honk! JR. is a heart warming celebration of being different that is sure to delight audiences of all ages with its sparkling wit, unique charm and memorable score.
Performance dates: February 20 – 22, 2026 with at least one daytime school performance.

Talk to, and more importantly, listen to your kids….images online are tough for us to see sometimes, imagine how younger minds are reacting.

We are heartbroken by the shocking acts of gun violence that occurred yesterday, which reverberate through our communities and are witnessed by children – in more ways than we often realize.

On September 11th, which happened 24 years ago today, we learned how repeated footage of tragedy affects children. On 9/11, children couldn’t escape the TV footage of planes crashing and buildings falling. Now, graphic videos of shootings circulate on social media, exposing kids to violence they aren’t ready to see. Children shouldn’t carry the weight of the world’s tragedies on their screens.

Parenting through these moments is scary and overwhelming, but parents can help support children by checking in, limiting exposure, and offering comfort and safety. And as pediatricians, AAP remains deeply committed to advocating for gun violence prevention and its lasting impact on young people.
