This is Shel Silverstein on the back of a children’s book…

Here’s my favorite poem of his:

Listen to the MUSTN’TS child,

Listen to the DON’TS

Listen to the SHOULDN’TS

The IMPOSSIBLES, the WON’TS

Listen to the NEVER HAVES

Then listen close to me -

Anything can happen,

child ANYTHING can be.

Talk to, and more importantly, listen to your kids….images online are tough for us to see sometimes, imagine how younger minds are reacting.

We are heartbroken by the shocking acts of gun violence that occurred yesterday, which reverberate through our communities and are witnessed by children – in more ways than we often realize.

On September 11th, which happened 24 years ago today, we learned how repeated footage of tragedy affects children. On 9/11, children couldn’t escape the TV footage of planes crashing and buildings falling. Now, graphic videos of shootings circulate on social media, exposing kids to violence they aren’t ready to see. Children shouldn’t carry the weight of the world’s tragedies on their screens.

Parenting through these moments is scary and overwhelming, but parents can help support children by checking in, limiting exposure, and offering comfort and safety. And as pediatricians, AAP remains deeply committed to advocating for gun violence prevention and its lasting impact on young people.

The removal of the COVID vaccine from the immunization schedule bypasses evidence-based processes necessary to ensure vaccine safety, ignores the expertise of independent medical experts and could have long-term implications on the availability to families and health care workers. This adds only further confusion for parents and pediatricians. What is clear is that pregnant women, infants and young children are at higher risk of hospitalization from COVID, and the safety of the COVID vaccine has been widely demonstrated.
