When it comes to mental health, small actions equal big impact.

If you are worried about your mental health or are worried about someone you know, there are resources and people out there who are willing to help, no matter what your situation is.

Talking about mental health helps promote acceptance and encourages people to seek help.

Whether we share resources, encourage others to seek help, or simply are there for someone when they need us, we instill hope and can help others to reach out when they need to most.

For the past 20 years, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has recognized Mental Health Awareness Month (MHAM) every May to increase awareness about the vital role mental health plays in our overall health and well-being.

How Did Those Red Rocks Get There?

At Southern Peaks, we are committed to creating experiential learning experiences that our youth will carry with them, in their heart and soul, forever!

One of the favorite field trips for the team and youth this summer was when they experienced the unique geological majesty of the Garden of the Gods! From learning about rock types, fossils, geological processes, rock layers and formations experienced in the Park to hands-on activities including a walking, hiking, and climbing adventure in the Park to experience the power and wonder of geology firsthand.

Youth learned how the Garden is a crossroads of plants and animals from six different ecosystems. Youth explored the interdependence of the Park’s animal and plant life. Learning about the local about the local plants and animals really connects our youth to the natural world. Youth experienced the sacredness of the Circle and feel the Healing Power it can provide when we seek it. The amazing grounding this provides for our youth is obviously therapeutic!

Experiential Learning creates context for our youth to build on, develops hope, willingness to grow, and increases their sense of identity, self-worth and self-understanding.

We are grateful to everyone and everything that helps us create these amazing learning experiences for our youth!

Meet Willis Odom, our Boys Transition/Vocation teacher at Southern Peaks! Willis teaches his students about exploring careers, completing job applications, exploring colleges, driver's education and cooking skills. He does an amazing job with helping students achieve their goals. We are lucky to have him as a part of the Southern Peaks Team!

Laura Sandoval has been a teacher here for over 2 years. She teaches the Girls Transition Classroom and helps many young girls succeed every day. The classroom’s main focus is preparing girls for their future. In addition to their education, girls learn social skills and ways to cope with their everyday struggles and past trauma. Laura loves working with the girls, teaching them life skills, helping to foster their interests and assisting them in developing goals for their future. Outside of work, Laura enjoys gardening, sewing and bargain shopping. Laura shares her hobbies with her students. Students have sewn masks, cooked meals and bargain shopped with Laura at local stores to help develop their independent living skills. Each week the girls learn how to cook a new dish and then they enjoy a meal together as a class. Laura is an asset to Southern Peaks! We greatly appreciate her hard work and her dedication to helping our youth succeed on a daily basis! Thank you Laura!

Southern Peaks' on-site Phoenix Academy offers a range of education services to include traditional school classes where students can earn a standard diploma, remote learning, credit recovery and GED classes. The Phoenix Academy uses Pearson software to deliver the GED test at our facility. We work with GED manager, GED.com and with the Colorado Department of Education to make sure that our students have the utmost opportunities for success. Congratulations to our most recent graduate who hails from the Girls Transition Classroom!
