Our bodies constantly talk to us. We are let know when there is something not quite right. This is guided by an innate sense of knowing. When we ignore those messages we become ill. If we ignore the initial illness it often leads into a stronger longer lasting illness that in some cases becomes chronic. People ignore or push through a cold, that cold leads to a sinus infection, if untreated the sinus infection leads to respiratory problems. You know the early signs of an illness. Give your body support and rest before it becomes a full blown illness. When was the last time you ignored your intuitive knowing?

Weekends can often be the hardest time to take care of ourselves. I often put myself last and this is especially true on weekends. Boundary setting, getting enough rest, eating properly almost everything is harder on the weekends. This is partially a systematic problem from not having enough time to rest in general. This is your reminder before the weekend starts to look at what is going to support you most on the weekend. Turn this into a weekly routine and ask yourself is this something that supports my well being? If it is not supportive dive deeper look at is it not supportive right now or is it not supportive ever. Figure out your plans ahead of time and communicate those plans to those you care about. Do not let those in your life stop you from doing what is supportive. Keep up the boundaries that keep you healthy even on the weekend. I hope you have a wonderful and restful weekend where you take care of you!

This morning I had a discussion with my daughter about change. We have been getting a late start to school and I told her we need to change our morning routine so it doesn't happen anymore. She told me she hates change even small change. I thought about that and to a certain extent we all hate change. There are moments in our lives that we wish to freeze in place and last forever, times when we don't want to let go of something, times we want nothing more than for change to happen and yet it doesn't come. Change comes in small increments or sometimes all at once. The road towards an illness is not a sudden change. It starts small from everyday occurrences and grows into something that feels unmanageable and often feels that it has always been there. Combating these small things leads us to stay healthy. Taking care of ourselves, creating a balance in our lives, and recognizing our bodies early warning signs are crucial to staying healthy. Change can be scary, changes in our health can be overwhelming, something as small as a change in a routine can seem like a mountain but it doesn't have to be. What are you doing to bring about healthy changes in your life and do you need help to achieve them?

Many people think that herbal remedies can only treat acute illnesses but that is far from the truth. Herbal treatments can be used for both acute and chronic illnesses. Treating chronic illness is so rewarding. I love to help people be able to live their life again. The length of treatment and combination of treatment does depend on if the illness is chronic or acute. Someone with a cold or the flu requires rest and a tea that helps support the immune system as well as alleviate symptoms. A chronic illness usually needs a combination of internal and external treatments. Chronic illness also usually takes longer to recover from as it has been in the system longer. Temporary diet changes and lifestyle changes can be needed as well.

This week I took a friend to Denver so she could speak at a conference. We arrived early and were both excited to find out that Tattered Cover was open. It was so fun to look at all the different books and to support an independent book store. I found a book for myself The boy, the mole, the fox, and the horse and a birthday present for my daughter. What did you do for fun this week?

This question is one of my favorite to answer! What I have found with modern medications is that they tend to throw our bodies further out of balance creating new symptoms and keeping us ill. So many prescription medications have a long list of possible side effects that often sound worse than the original issue. Even over the counter medications suppress our bodies natural response or do not target an issue specifically enough. Herbal treatment focuses on working with our bodies. Herbal formulas use many herbs to balance out any extremes that may come from one herb. I always consider contraindications when building a formula. This is why I love doing custom work. Being able to build a formula specifically for one person and their body instead of a general use is so amazing. I hope that you have an amazing week! What is stopping you from trying an herbal formula for your health issues?

I love being able to help people with the knowledge I have gained about herbs. The following testimonial is from a friend when I was still in school. I hope everyone has a restful Sunday!
I’ve used custom-made herbal products created by independent herbal practitioners for over 40 years. They’ve proven invaluable for me. The joint salve that Kris provided is one of the silkiest, most comforting blends I’ve ever used. It reduces pain within minutes, is long-lasting and gently powerful. My touchy skin loves it, my joints love it - my body is relieved. Thank you Kris! Mary-Ellen

Happy Monday! Okay let's get into the nitty gritty details of the scientific study of herbs. This requires a small history lesson. In the 1990's in the U.S. the FDA decided that there are too many herbs to test and validate so they said that people can use and take them but all companies have to put the statement "This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. In the past there have been studies on plants such as willow and foxglove that were later turned into medications aspirin and digitalis. These studies usually focus on trying to find the one "active ingredient" that is in the plant and then how to distill and make a man made copy of that ingredient. This view ignores the qualitative data that we have of the over 12,000 years that herbs have been used in India, China, and North America. India has used herbs and food as a form of medicine for over 6,000 years, China and North America have used herbs for over 3,000 years. Herbalists argue that we still do not understand the complexities of plants and that the nutrients of the whole plant are needed for the full effect of the plant to happen. None of the people who were our ancestors would have continued to use herbs if they did not have an effect on the body. There are also studies that are currently being done on herbs by independent companies and groups. Most importantly always trust your body and how it reacts to herbal remedies. You should consult with a physician before using an herbal remedy especially if you are taking prescription medications. A good doctor will take the time to research what you are taking and if there are any contraindications with your current medications. In short there is plenty of evidence and scientific basis that herbal remedies help people.

With the new year I have decided to do things that feed my soul. Whatever that might be. So last weekend I went on a hike with my daughter. It was so nice to not worry about my phone and not have a time limit on what we were doing. We ended up hiking for 2 hours. My favorite part was my daughter singing about going on an adventure. What have you done to feed your soul lately?

A question I am asked often is are herbal remedies safe? Out of the millions of plants on our planet only 14 of them are banned for use by herbalists. There is no regulatory agency in the U.S. who has decided this herbalists as a group have said that these are not safe. Herbs can have contraindications which means that they should be avoided for certain issues but there are multiple options of herbs to choose from for each issue that makes it easy to avoid those contraindications. Always consult with a qualified professional and your physician before using any herbal remedy.

This herb is amazing and has so many uses! One of the most amazing is that this herb is tridoshic. This means that it supports all three doshas, pitta, kapha, and vata, so it is widely used for many different formulas. One of the formulas I use it in is my cold/flu tea. Information learned from The way of Ayurvedic Herbs by Karta Purkh Singh Khalsa and Michael Tierra. Always consult with a physician before using any herb or herbal remedy.

I recently was asked a great question about herbal remedies. They asked if the remedies could mix with their prescription medicine. The answer is yes. Anytime someone has prescription medication and is seeing me I look at possible interactions and advise the client to speak with their medical provider about the herbal remedies. There are multiple options for herbs and usually the interactions can be avoided. Ultimately the goal is to reduce or even eliminate the use of prescription medications but again only with the guidance, help and approval of a physician. You should always discuss any vitamins or other herbal remedies with your doctor before taking them. Happy new year!
