Independence Day (colloquially the Fourth of July) commemorates the Declaration of Independence, which was ratified by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, establishing the United States of America. The Founding Father delegates of the Second Continental Congress declared that the Thirteen Colonies were no longer subject (and subordinate) to the monarch of Britain, King George III, and were now united, free, and independent states. The Congress voted to approve independence by passing the Lee Resolution on July 2, and adopted the Declaration of Independence two days later, on July 4.

The Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, but the news of the law did not make it to a large number of enslaved black people, particularly those in Texas. On June 19, 1865, a force of soldiers made their way to Galveston, Texas, and the army was there to enforce the law. The Emancipation Proclamation did not free all enslaved people in the United States, particularly those in the border states loyal to the Union, but it did pave the way for the abolishment of all slavery with the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution on December 18, 1865.
