When I was a kid we had a cow that was artificially inseminated with a bull that was part BUFFALO. I was anxious to see the Beefalo calf when the time came for it to be born. I was expecting it to look like a baby buffalo but it looked like every other calf I had ever seen. I was quiet disappointed.

I don’t know if buffalo calves are born with humps or if they show up later on but our baby calf did not have one.

Humps are okay if you are a buffalo, but what if you are a human and you really don’t want one? I had a conversation about this with someone recently.

Most of the time these humps are where some people carry fat and cause no problems. You can watch your posture which will help them be less obvious.

Three basic exercises come to mind that can also help.
1. Chin tucks. 2. Pec stretches. 3. Taping two tennis balls together, putting them in a sock and lying on them to loosen the tight muscles in your upper back where the hump is.

You may want to have your physical therapist, chiropractor or family doctor check out your hump (it’s smart to have any humps or lumps checked out).

Occasionally there can be abnormal growths such as cysts ( which are fluid-filled sacs) or tumors that cause humps. Injuries to the spine or simply how your spine has formed may be to blame.

Some medications for obesity can cause this and so can long-term steroid use.

In rare cases having a condition called Cushing Syndrome is the reason for a neck hump, that’s from abnormal levels of the hormone cortisol, but there will likely be other symptoms.

My new batch of Comfrey Root Salve is ready. I tried it out today when I gave a Medical Massage and the patient liked it.

My husband jokingly says I just keep him around to open jars. I thought I’d share what I do when he isn’t here. It usually works. Notice the rubber bands I wrapped around the lid. Rubber gloves also help provide traction or you can use both rubber bands and rubber gloves.

I’ve got a new batch started because I’ve either used up or sold all of this batch.

Good exercises!

I have seen 2 new Drs recently. One had me fill out 7 pages of paperwork, it took me about 20 minutes to complete. The other had me fill out 11 pages! Some of the information they asked was not necessary for my care. Here is the 1 page I have my patients fill out. I usually have them also draw where their pain is located, on another form of a human body.

Does it bug you to give so much personal information every time you see a healthcare provider?

It’s usually the simple things done consistently that end up helping the most.

When you hurt think of what you can do to break up that pain cycle. For example; rest the area that hurts, try an analgesic cream, use an ice pack or heat (or you can alternate the two), take over the counter pain medications, stretch tight muscles, get aerobic exercise to increase your body’s natural pain killers-the endorphins, decrease stress etc. You may want to try all of these things. I like using TENS too.

I just took a course called Cardiac Rehab effects of heat and cold and learned that being low in Vitamin D (which we get from the sun) can contribute to muscle weakness. Most of my home health patients hardly ever get outside. I try to encourage them to go outside for a few minutes if they are able.

PAGOPHAGIA…I just learned the word for a symptom I had several years ago. It means “you crave chewing ice.”

I went through several months of craving ice so bad I would sometimes go through 3 trays of ice cubes a day or stop at a gas station and buy a soda pop, but pour most of it out so I could just enjoy the ice. I knew where the places were that had that nice soft crushed ice too!

It turns out PAGOPHAGIA is a symptom of anemia. I was given iron transfusions and the cravings went away within a few days. Sometime later when the symptoms returned I knew I needed to get blood work done again and sure enough I was anemic and needed another transfusion.

Do you crave ice? You could have PAGOPHAGIA

About me

I am mid-Missouri’s only Physical Therapist using The Muscle Release Technique℠. This technique often eliminates pain that hasn't responded to traditional Physical Therapy treatments (such as strengthening exercises, ultra sound, electrical stimulation, cryotherapy, moist heat, kinisotaping etc.). My treatments are mostly hands-on, gentle stretching, that treats pain at it’s source.

I love helping people in pain find lasting relief! I offer an affordable cash-rate with no surprises. Treatments are typically about the same cost as a co-pay. This is a great option for people without insurance. Lasting relief is a phone call away. Call 573-808-7986 to book your evaluation today. Get back to living the life you love!

I’m originally from New Mexico where my family are farmers and ranchers. I have always enjoyed learning about health and thought it would be HUMERUS to take an ANATOMY class. After reading about the courses in a PHYSICAL THERAPY ASSISTANT program, I decided to take them all, at Tulsa Junior College in 1992. I worked in the HOME HEALTH setting until 1996, then decided to really put some MUSCLE into what I knew and returned to school for my Bachelor of Science in PHYSICAL THERAPY in 1996, graduating from the University of Health Sciences Antigua, West Indies. I have experience in a variety of settings, most of it working with geriatrics.

I have additional training in treating pain from REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURIES using the MUSCLE RELEASE TECHNIQUEsm. I see good results with this treatment because it addresses the CAUSE OF PAIN. Conditions I have treated include; HEADACHES, NECK AND SHOULDER PAIN, TENNIS ELBOW, CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME, LOW BACK PAIN, KNEE PAIN, PLANTAR FASCIITIS, TENDONITIS and BURSITIS. My PATIENTS really love this treatment and I love hearing them say, “You give me hope”. “I have had this pain for years and have tried everything, you have gotten me out of pain at last.”
