𝐊𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐯𝐬. 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞?

When it comes to treating depression, especially treatment-resistant depression, traditional antidepressants have long been the go-to. But recently, ketamine has been gaining attention as a fast-acting alternative. Here’s how they differ:

💊 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬: (like SSRIs and SNRIs) usually take weeks to show results and work by gradually increasing serotonin levels in the brain. They’re effective for many, but not everyone responds positively.

⚡ 𝐊𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞: originally used as an anesthetic, has been found to provide rapid relief from depressive symptoms—sometimes within hours! It works differently by influencing glutamate, a neurotransmitter associated with mood regulation.

🔄 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬:Studies show that while antidepressants are effective for about 35%-45% of people, ketamine offers relief to many who haven’t responded to other treatments.

🕒 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Antidepressants often require weeks to months to take effect, whereas ketamine works within hours to days.

⚠️ 𝐒𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬: Both have potential side effects, but they vary. Ketamine may cause dissociation and nausea during administration, while antidepressants can lead to weight gain, sexual dysfunction, or emotional numbing.

KAP combines the therapeutic effects of ketamine, a legal, prescription medication, with traditional psychotherapy to help clients who may be struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, or trauma.
