Having the flu is no fun. 🤒 While there is no foolproof method to avoiding the flu, following these steps will significantly reduce your risk this flu season:
◾ Get vaccinated: The flu vaccine is the single most effective way to prevent the flu. While it's not 100% effective, it significantly reduces your risk of getting sick and lessens the severity of illness if you do get it.
◾ Practice good hygiene: This is crucial in preventing the spread of the flu virus. Frequent handwashing, avoiding touching your face, covering coughs and sneezes, and cleaning and disinfecting surfaces go a long way.
◾ Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Get enough sleep, eat a balanced diet, manage stress, and stay hydrated.
◾ Avoid close contact with sick people.
◾ Stay home when you're sick.

Today is National Injury Prevention Day, and St. Thomas More Hospital joins the Injury Free Coalition for Kids, other trauma centers, and numerous organizations across the nation in “Shining a Light” to prevent serious injuries. Across CommonSpirit's Mountain Region, many of our team members are wearing green to show that we can make a difference in our communities! Green represents life, safety, health, growth and prosperity. Here are Nancy Bartkowiak, our trauma program manager, and Dr. Rob Lins, our trauma medical director, donning green!

In addition to St. Thomas More Hospital, we have a number of trauma centers in our system, each with a mission to reduce the number of traumatic injuries in our communities. Unintentional injuries and violence are the leading cause of death and hospitalization of people from the ages of 1 to 44. Every year, traumatic injuries lead to more than 278,345 deaths, 2.8 million hospitalizations, and 18.5 million Emergency Department visits across our country.

It is important to note that injuries and deaths are often preventable, and that is why CommonSpirit joins other injury prevention organizations on this day to promote safety, wherever you live, work, travel and play. ”Shine a green light on safety!”

More than 29 million Americans have diabetes, and 1 in 4 don't know it. Another 86 million adults have prediabetes, which can lead to type 2 diabetes within five years if action isn't taken to reduce blood sugar levels. World Diabetes Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about diabetes and the serious health problems it can cause, and also to support everyone throughout our communities working to take control of their diabetes.

At CommonSpirit, our doctors, nurses, educators and dietitians are committed to providing you with complete diabetes care - from healthy meal planning and increased physical activity to medication management and more. Learn more at mountain.commonspirit.org/diabetes

Most pedestrian fatalities happen in the dark or during low-light conditions. With shorter days upon us and Halloween on tap, make sure you're doing your part to prevent accidents from happening in our communities. Remember to:
🧐 Drive alert at all times, especially in areas near schools, parks, shopping centers and transit stops.
🐢 Follow the speed limit — speeding endangers everyone on the road but puts pedestrians at the greatest risk.
🚶 Use caution while turning and be aware of pedestrians when traffic signals turn green.
