Did you know your lymphatic system is one of the most important — and most overlooked — systems in your body?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialized massage technique designed to stimulate the flow of lymph fluid and reduce swelling caused by lymphedema, lipedema, surgery, or chronic conditions.

✅ Reduces swelling and heaviness in the arms, legs, or trunk
✅ Improves circulation and immune function
✅ Decreases pain, tightness, and discomfort
✅ Promotes healing after surgery or injury
✅ Helps manage lymphedema long-term as part of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)

MLD isn't just a massage — it's a medically recognized treatment that can change your daily life.

At the Lymphedema & Wound Care Center of Southwestern PA, we specialize in MLD performed by a certified, experienced provider. Whether you've just been diagnosed or have been managing lymphedema for years, we're here to help.

🚶‍♀️ Did you know that simply WALKING can be one of the best things you do for swollen legs?

If you're dealing with edema (swelling) in your lower legs or ankles, movement is medicine — and here's why:
Your calf muscles are your secret weapon. When you walk, your calf muscles contract and act like a pump, pushing fluid from your legs back up toward your heart.
No movement = no pump = more swelling.

✅ Benefits of regular walking & increased activity for lower leg edema:

👣 Activates the calf muscle pump to move fluid out of the legs

❤️ Improves circulation and lymphatic flow

📉 Reduces the feeling of heaviness, tightness, and achiness

🦵 Helps compression garments work MORE effectively

⚖️ Supports a healthy weight, which reduces pressure on
lymphatic and venous systems

😴 Improves sleep and overall energy levels

How much is enough? Even short, frequent walks throughout the day make a difference! Aim for 10–15 minute walks 2–3 times daily if a longer walk feels like too much.
The key is consistency over intensity.

⚠️ Not all swelling is the same. If your edema is new, worsening, or accompanied by pain, redness, or skin changes — please don't wait. It's time to be evaluated.

At Lymphedema & Wound Care Center of Southwestern PA, we specialize in diagnosing and treating lymphedema, lipedema, chronic edema, and lower leg wounds. We'll build a personalized plan that works for YOUR body.

What is lymphedema - and why does awareness matter? Lymphedema is a chronic condition caused by damage or disruption to the lymphatic system, leading to swelling, often in the arms, legs, or other areas of the body.

While there’s no cure, early diagnosis, ongoing education, and the right support can make a life-changing difference.

This , learn how the National Lymphedema Network supports patients, caregivers, and clinicians through trusted education, access to resources, and a strong, connected community.

Because when each group is supported, care improves - and no one faces lymphedema alone.

"It's Just Fat." — The Three Words That Have Left Thousands of Women Suffering for Years Without Answers.

What is Dercum's Disease?
Dercum's Disease, also known as Adiposis Dolorosa or Lipomatosis Dolorosa, is a rare chronic condition first described by neurologist Dr. Francis Xavier Dercum in 1892. It is characterized by multiple, painful lipomas — benign fatty tumors that develop in the subcutaneous tissue (the layer of fat just beneath the skin).

Who does it affect?
Dercum's Disease most commonly affects postmenopausal women, though it can occur in anyone. Because symptoms overlap with other conditions, it is frequently misdiagnosed for 10+ years before a correct diagnosis is made.

What are the symptoms?
🔹 Painful, tender fatty deposits — most commonly on the trunk, upper arms, and thighs
🔹 Unexplained weight gain that is difficult to lose
🔹 Chronic fatigue and weakness
🔹 Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
🔹 Depression and anxiety
🔹 Joint and muscle pain
🔹 Sleep disturbances
🔹 Easy bruising

What causes it?
The exact cause is unknown, but researchers believe it may involve dysfunction of the lymphatic system, nervous system abnormalities, immune dysregulation, and endocrine (hormonal) factors. The painful nature of the lipomas — unlike typical benign lipomas that are painless — suggests nerve involvement within or around the fatty tissue.

How is it treated?
There is currently no cure for Dercum's Disease, but symptoms can be managed through a multimodal approach:

✔️ Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) — gentle massage technique that stimulates lymphatic flow, reduces swelling, and has been shown to significantly decrease pain in Dercum's patients

✔️ Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) — a comprehensive lymphatic treatment program

✔️ Compression therapy

✔️ Pain management

✔️ Surgical removal of lipomas in severe cases (though recurrence is common)

✔️ Low-dose naltrexone (an emerging option being studied)

How can we help?
At the Lymphedema & Wound Care Center of Southwestern PA, our specialized lymphatic therapies — including MLD and CDT — can be an important part of your Dercum's Disease management plan. Many patients experience meaningful reduction in pain and swelling with consistent lymphatic care.

If you have been diagnosed with Dercum's Disease, or suspect you may have it, we encourage you to call the Lymphedema & Wound Care Center and ask about lymphatic therapy as part of your treatment.
