Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy: A Non-Invasive Path to Healing and Improved Quality of Life
In the realm of chronic circulatory and lymphatic conditions, the announcement of Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy (DLT) as an available treatment option is truly significant. This non-invasive therapy offers a revitalizing approach for patients struggling with debilitating symptoms that significantly impact their daily lives.

Who is this Therapy For?
DLT is specifically designed to address a range of challenging conditions, including:
1. Edema: General swelling caused by fluid retention.
2. Lymphedema: Chronic swelling, often in limbs, due to impaired lymphatic system function.
3. Venous Insufficiency: A condition where veins have difficulty sending blood from the legs back to the heart.
4. Venous Ulcers: Open sores on the legs, typically caused by venous insufficiency.
5. Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD): Narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs.

These ailments often lead to chronic discomfort, reduced mobility, and significantly diminished quality of life, with severe cases even threatening limb viability.

The Promise of a Non-Invasive Approach:

What immediately stands out about DLT is its non-invasive nature. Unlike surgical interventions or pharmaceutical approaches that may carry side effects, DLT works with the body's natural systems to gently and effectively restore optimal circulation. This is a crucial distinction, offering a much-needed alternative for those seeking effective treatment without the risks associated with more aggressive procedures.

Key Benefits and Impact:

Restores Circulation and Promotes Healing: The core mechanism of DLT is its ability to improve both lymphatic and blood circulation. For conditions like lymphedema and edema, it helps decongest the affected areas, reducing swelling and discomfort. For venous insufficiency and venous ulcers, improved circulation is paramount for delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues, thus accelerating the healing process of stubborn wounds.

Helps Prevent the Need for Amputation: This is perhaps one of the most impactful claims. For patients with severe venous insufficiency or Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), where compromised circulation puts them at high risk of tissue death and subsequent amputation, DLT offers a vital preventative strategy. By enhancing blood flow and reducing fluid buildup, it mitigates the underlying issues that often lead to severe tissue damage and limb loss. This therapy can truly be a limb-saving intervention.

Significant Improvement in Quality of Life: Beyond the direct physical benefits, the impact on a patient's quality of life cannot be overstated. Reduced swelling, diminished pain, increased mobility, and the psychological relief of seeing wounds heal can transform daily living. Patients can anticipate a therapy that is gentle yet profoundly effective, designed not just to treat symptoms but to address the root causes of their discomfort, empowering them to regain independence and participation in activities they once enjoyed.

Lipedema Often Goes Unrecognized. It’s Time to Change That

What is Lipedema?

Lipedema is a long-term condition that causes abnormal fat buildup in the lower part of your body. Lipedema most often involves your butt, thighs and calves. Some people have it in their hips or upper arms. It doesn’t affect your hands or feet.

People sometimes confuse lipedema with having overweight or lymphedema, but these are different conditions. However, lipedema can lead to lymphedema.

How is Lipedema treated?

Researchers haven’t found a cure, but lipedema treatments can help you feel better by reducing pain and inflammation. You can start with simple, noninvasive treatment for lipedema and switch to more complex treatments if needed.

Why wear compression? It’s hot, tight and uncomfortable, so why should we wear it?

1. Compression is the cornerstone for healing. When we apply compression, it helps to support the venous system by reducing venous backflow and promoting blood flow towards the heart.

2. When compression is applied appropriately, it can reduce swelling, normalize venous function, optimize healing of ulcers and wounds, improve lymphatic function, enhance arterial pulse, diminish episodes of recurrent cellulitis and reduce pain.

3. There are different types of compression. Depending upon your needs for compression there are socks, shorts, shirts, vest, wraps, hose, sleeves and pumps. We will measure and order the appropriate garments for you.

4. How much compression do you need? Individual needs may vary, so lower or higher levels of compression may be required based on specific patient circumstances. We will perform an evaluation and prescribed the appropriate diagnostic tests to determine the appropriate amount of compression to meet your needs.

5. For lymphedema compression, the recommended amounts of compression are as follows:
Class 1: 20-30 mmHg.
Class 2: 30-40 mmHg.
Standard protocol for vein disease: 30-40 mmHg.

6. Keep in mind compression garments are needed for lifelong management of lymphedema.
