🌿 Board Member Search – Join the Dewey Community 🌿

We’re looking to grow our board and welcome individuals who feel called to support early childhood education, nature-based learning, and community-centered programs.

No need to commit to in-person meetings, Zoom is always an option, and flexibility is part of how we work. Come be a part of the magic by offering your time here and there in a way that works for you.

We are seeking thoughtful, creative individuals who can bring:
✨ brainstorming and visioning
✨ professional skillsets and lived experience

🌿 Looking for Wood Chip Donation 🌿

Hi friends! The Dewey School is working on refreshing our garden bed areas, and we’re looking for a donation of wood chips to help us bring these spaces to life for the children.

If you’re a local tree service (or know someone who is) with extra wood chips from a recent job, we would love to give them a home! These materials will be used by the children as they plant, tend, and care for their garden spaces, supporting hands-on, nature-based learning.

Delivery to our space in Canterbury would be greatly appreciated, but we’re happy to coordinate in any way that works best.

Thank you for supporting our little community and helping create meaningful outdoor learning spaces! 🌱

Feel free to message us directly or comment below!

With microscopes in hand, the children zoomed in on spring’s tiniest creatures. Discovering details they never knew were there. Each lens sparked curiosity, conversation, and a whole new way of seeing 🐞🌱

Today’s adventure led us to fallen trees, where beneath the bark and along the damp wood we discovered busy little millipedes making their way through their hidden world.

The children gathered close watching, wondering, asking questions, and sharing discoveries with one another.
“How many legs do they have?”
“Where are they going?”
“Do they like the dark?”

Moments like these remind us that curiosity lives in the smallest places. A simple log becomes a world of exploration, connection, and awe.

In the forest, every discovery no matter how small sparks something big 🌿💛

There’s something magical about children creating together: standing tall, sharing ideas, chatting, laughing, and letting their imaginations spill onto the canvas. Every color holds a conversation, every stroke a connection.

This is where creativity and friendship meet 💛

🌿 The Magic of Spring Sit Spots 🌼
As the season shifts, we are embracing the quiet practice of “sit spots” begins, returning to the same place in nature to slow down, observe, and simply be.

In spring, these moments become especially meaningful:
• Noticing buds slowly opening and leaves beginning to unfurl
• Listening to birdsong and the return of familiar calls
• Watching insects emerge and the forest floor come alive
• Feeling the warmth of the sun and the coolness of the earth
• Building patience, focus, and a deep sense of calm

Sit spots invite children to form a relationship with the land seeing change over time, growing their awareness, and nurturing a sense of belonging in the natural world 🌱

In the quiet, so much is discovered 💛

💔 A Heartfelt Community Message from The Dewey School 💔

Our hearts are heavy as we share that our outdoor classroom space, The Meadow, has once again experienced significant destruction.

Over the years, we have lovingly opened and shared this space with our community, hoping it could be a place of connection, wonder, and respect for nature. Recently, in an effort to protect it, we placed signage indicating that The Meadow is no longer for public use.

Despite this, we are saddened to discover that several of our tools, storage boxes, books, and learning materials have once again been damaged or destroyed.

As a community, we care deeply for each of you. It is in that same spirit that we ask to please respect this space and our request that it no longer be used by visitors. This area is an essential part of our children’s daily learning, exploration, and sense of safety.

We remain committed to nurturing beauty, curiosity, and connection but we need your help to protect what has been created here.

With care and hope,
The Dewey School 🌿

🧶 A Little Extra Ask for Our Nest Builders 🪺

Our collection of natural materials is growing beautifully, thank you! 🌿

We are still hoping to gather a bit more:
• Wool
• Yarn

If you have any to spare, we kindly ask:
✨ Natural fibers only (wool, cotton)

These soft fibers help create cozy nest linings while keeping our feathered friends safe 🐦

Thank you for continuing to support our little builders and their big ideas 💛
