ATTENTION CURRENT FAMILIES!!

We are inundated with both raspberries and blueberries this year. If you would like to pick when your child is in therapy, please bring containers. I would be thrilled to share our crop with you this year! And please sample as you go, the berries are never as tasty as right off the bush 🫐 😍

Do you have a child who loves to help at home? Being mummy or daddy’s best helper has lots of functional benefits for your child!

This is my friend that is working on postural endurance and muscular strengthening and endurance. He spent 45 minutes today helping me in the gardens and the orchard, watering trees, watering flowers, putting up the supports for our old peach tree (which is heavily laden this year), and even cutting a bouquet for his mom whose birthday is tomorrow. (His OT was sick today, so we threw in some work with the gardening shears 😉)

He didn’t sit down or ask for a rest break once today, it was a huge win for his PT goals!

My 7:30am friend and I went on a rescue mission this morning and saved 50+ red newts from the road while walking over 1/2 a mile, 50+!

In PT we work a lot on endurance, postural strength and overall strength and this was a motivating way to get in walking, squats, and visual scanning (he does a lot of ocular work with OT). Working closely with his family and other members of his team helps us all to work with him as a whole and not just our separate parts.

Coming to PT here keeps him engaged, motivated, and I can make his sessions functional. Who wants to do PT while going on a newt rescue mission! 🙋🏻‍♀️

My youngest turned 4 over the weekend and was gifted his first big kid bike from his Auntie! I’ve had lots of practice teaching kids how to ride a two wheeler and the best advice I can give is…get them on a balance bike early! And avoid giving them training wheels if you can.

My now 4 year old has been riding a balance bike since he was almost 2, and it makes all the difference in the world!

The grass is often wet in the mornings, but no problem, because barefoot can often be the better option!

Bare foot exploring allows the child to bring in more information about the surfaces they are navigating as their feet are in direct contact. The more sensory information we have to process, the more effectively we can plan our movements. This child is much more independent on the boulder wall in her bare feet than she is in shoes…more information, better success.

This is why it’s always been part of the clinic plan to have a large grassy area to work on. I’ve been obsessing over the grass around the clinic for the past year and it’s finally to a point where it’s safe for little (or big) bare feet! Yay!
