If your child or student always says huh? or what?, it’s not their hearing…

Kids who often need instructions given to them multiple times, or those that appear to not be listening, typically don’t have hearing problems.

If the child often asks “huh?” or “what?”, it could be an Auditory Processing problem.

You may begin to notice the signs as the child gets older when the teacher says the child struggles to complete homework, tasks and consistently asks what they should be doing.

Other signs may include the following:

👂🏻Doesn’t like to read or to be read to
👂🏻Understands written language rather than spoken language
👂🏻Hears, but doesn’t listen
👂🏻Struggles to follow conversations

It’s easy to feel like you are being ignored. However, the child is usually not ignoring on purpose, but is rather having trouble following directions through their auditory system.

Executive dysfunction is often misunderstood—it can look like laziness, carelessness, or lack of motivation from the outside. But as this graphic powerfully illustrates, what may seem like being “distracted” or “unmotivated” is often the result of deeper challenges like anxiety, burnout, difficulty switching tasks, or lack of support.

At NESCA, we understand the complexity of executive functioning and offer individualized, ongoing Executive Function Coaching as well as summer intensive programs to help children, teens, and young adults build the tools they need to thrive.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition typically diagnosed in childhood. But some people, specifically people assigned female at birth , may go undiagnosed until adulthood.

Traditional estimates find that boys are four times as likely as girls to receive an autism diagnosis. But experts are realizing that almost as many females as males may have autism — recent research shows that nearly 80% of autistic females are undiagnosed as of age 18.

An autism diagnosis can be a relief for many adults. It may explain symptoms they’ve always had but have never been able to explain. It can also open doors to much-needed health resources and support. (via UCLA Health)
