No family is immune from stressors.
At some point in time, all families will experience stress – and that’s okay. Family stress can emerge from events or transitions inside the family (such as tension or arguments, divorce, or loss), outside of the family (such as living in an impoverished area or experiencing a natural disaster), or both at the same time. When families struggle to work together to combat stress, a number of consequences may arise to include negative emotions (such as feeling hurt, disappointed, or angry), decreased sense of connection, lack of order, and struggles with resiliency.

Both problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies can be used together to address present moments of discomfort/stress, as well as those that are predicted to occur in the future. By broadening and strengthening your coping skills, you may be better able to be proactive.
Are you using the right tool for the job?
Coping strategies fall on a continuum of effectiveness, with the two extremes being healthy (and effective) and unhealthy (and ineffective).

Is stress good or bad? The answer is both.
Stress serves as a warning sign for dangerous situations, triggering built-in survival mechanisms known as the “fight or flight response” that help us survive. Stress can also serve as a source of motivation. Before a job interview, stress can signal that the job is something that you really want! And, before completing an exam or competing in a sporting event, stress can contribute to optimal alertness and performance.
Yet, when stress becomes too chronically elevated and perceived negatively, effective coping and performance capabilities decrease. For some, stress may contribute to a “shut down” mode that is difficult to bounce back from.

LGBTQ+ individuals are more likely than heterosexual women and men to have a mental health issue.
Persons who are part of the LGBTQ+ population experience discrimination and inequality in their lives, as well as difficulties related to access and utilization of mental health services. These factors, as well as others, are known to contribute to overall poorer mental health among LGBTQ+ persons compared to heterosexual persons.
Experiences with mental health issues differ person to person regardless of sexual orientation and identity.

Chronic health issues have serious consequences.
Chronic health issues are among the leading causes of injury, disability, and death worldwide. Additionally, many individuals with a chronic health issue have a co-occurring mental health issue. Among the most common mental health issues are depression and anxiety. When left untreated, the stabilization or improvement of a chronic disease can be more difficult. For this reason, attention to mental health is an important part of treating chronic health issues.
We’re here to help.

Group Counseling: Connecting with Nature for Teens

For teens who want to integrate nature into their journey to wellness, this is a group for people ages 13-17 who are interested in learning mindfulness and emotion regulation skills focused around nature. Each week group members will learn one Dialectical Behavioral Therapy skill focused on mindfulness or emotional regulation, one nature-based skill, and then have the opportunity to practice these skills in a nature setting. This group will take place at the entrance of Jackson Bog, specifically at the South Park B pavilion. This group does not require any intense hiking or movement. Group members will be encouraged to participate at their own comfort level. The goal of this group is to help members develop skills based around nature, that they can use in their day-to-day life to promote wellness.
