Our COTA, Sam, and Mrs Wenning are Kindergarten teacher from Sauder Elementary will be teaching the class and we will be having OT students assist as well. The class will be packed full Of fun and learning the skills needed to succeed in preschool and/or Kindergarten! Maybe “cluttered” is a better word than “messy.” As a pediatric physical therapist, I often tell parents that a cluttered room can actually be like a built in obstacle course for their little one. With couch cushions, blanket rolls, pillows, and toys scattered around the room, kids get the chance to practice stepping between, over and around objects. Moving sideways, and even trying a few new movement patterns. It’s a built-in way to encourage balance, coordination, and problem-solving!

Have you seen these fun card holders?
Holding multiple cards in one hand is very difficult for little kids that are still developing different types of grasping pattern’s. The grasp used for this type of activity is called the “lumbrical grip” and requires fingers to be straight while pulling thumb across palm and towards the fingers. That’s a lot of work for little underdeveloped hands. However this grip is important and will strengthen muscles needed for pencil writing.
This little gadget helps kids with little hands not only hold their cards properly and allows for one hand to be free to pull a card out. Making card playing more fun and engaging. No one wants to play “Go Fish” with all of their cards laying out on the ground for everyone to see. Or worse, with all the cards mushed together in the kids hand so that they cant actually see the cards they are holding. That makes it harder and thus less fun for the kids and parents!
