The City of Westland’s Shine a Light event was absolutely amazing! We welcomed hundreds of guests into our sensory zone and gave out 1000+ fidgets and sensory tools - completely FREE to them! 💜

We are so incredibly thankful for all of the donations we received to make this calming space possible. We truly could not have done it without your support! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Mayor Coleman and Council President Pro-Tem Melissa Sampey invite you to join them tomorrow, April 26 from 4-6 pm for the Shine A Light: Autism Acceptance Community Day and Walk presented by Team Wellness - Westland and Sole Construction, taking place at Tattan Park (1901 N. Carlson). ALL ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND.

This free event aims to promote awareness, acceptance, and understanding of autism within the community while providing resources and support for individuals and families living with autism.

The festivities will feature a variety of engaging activities, including:
• Activities hosted by the Westland Police and Fire Departments
• Face painting for children
• DJ and lawn games
• Bounce houses for family fun
• Resource tables with information on autism support and services
• A fun sensory area designed for comfort and engagement
• Delicious and FREE food options and much more!

Amazon Wish List Supports Westland Autism Event

WESTLAND, Mich. — In celebration of Autism Acceptance Month, local speech pathologist Rachael Hendzell has launched an Amazon wish list to collect sensory and fidget items for Shine a Light: Autism Acceptance Community Day and Walk, set for Saturday, April 26 from 4–6 p.m. at Tattan Park.

Donated items will be used to create sensory bags for attendees. Hendzell’s organization, Super Sweet Speech, will match all donations to double the impact.

Communication Is Key AAC is helping us create a sensory friendly zone for our participants— a quiet, calming space created especially for individuals with autism and others who may benefit from a low-stimulation environment. This area is designed to offer a break from the hustle and bustle of the event!

April is Autism Acceptance Month! I'm thrilled to be working with the City of Westland to help them plan their Shine a Light: Autism Acceptance Community Day and Walk on Saturday, April 26th! The event will take place from 4:00-6:00pm at Tattan Park and Pavillion!

We are looking for donations that attendees can use as fidgets/sensory items and to create their very own sensory bag. Super Sweet Speech has decided to MATCH any donation that we receiving - doubling our impact!
