1 in 8 Teens Show Signs of Hearing Loss.

Examinations of more than 3,300 Dutch teenagers revealed 13% exhibited signs of noise-related hearing damage, with roughly 6% experiencing permanent hearing loss by age 18. The research team attributes these issues to frequent exposure to loud recreational noise—from earbuds, concerts, and fireworks—as a key risk, emphasizing the need for early screening, prevention, and safer listening habits during adolescence.

Just 20 Minutes of Exercise Twice a Week May Prevent Dementia.

Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, researchers found that older adults with mild-cognitive impairment were less likely to progress to dementia over an eight-year time period if they exercised at moderate-intensity—like brisk walking, for example—for at least 20 minutes twice a week. The findings demonstrate the ability of regular physical activity to delay or possibly prevent dementia.

Poor Cardiometabolic Health Influences Dementia Risk.

Using data from the China Kadoorie Biobank study, researchers found that individuals with a history of hypertension or diabetes were 21% and 36% more likely, respectively, to develop dementia over a twelve-year period. These findings suggest that preventive strategies targeting cardiometabolic disorders may also protect brain health.

Eating Alone Linked to Poorer Nutrition in Seniors.

Following an analysis of data concerning more than 80,000 older adults from across twelve countries, researchers from Flinders University report that those who regularly eat meals alone are more likely to have poorer diet quality, reduced intake of key food groups, and a higher risk of frailty than their peers who often share meals with others. Future studies will investigate how social interaction during mealtimes influences appetite, nutritional status, and overall well-being in aging populations.

Poor Lifestyle Choices Raise Neck and Back Pain Risk.

Surveys completed by 3,492 young adults without neck or back pain in the preceding three months revealed that those who engaged in three or more unhealthy behaviors—physical inactivity, high sitting time, meal skipping and risky use of alcohol, to***co, and illicit drugs—were 35% more likely to develop either neck or back pain in the following year.

Insufficient Sleep Linked to Shorter Life Expectancy.

Oregon Health & Science University researchers report that aside from smoking, failure to consistently sleep seven to nine hours a night may be the strongest risk factor of early death—even more than poor diet, physical inactivity, and loneliness. The authors note that sufficient sleep is essential for optimal cardiovascular, immune, and brain health.
