Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions—including central obesity, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, and elevated blood sugar—that occur together and increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. A study that included 15,959 middle-aged and older adults found that skipping breakfast four or more times a week increased the odds for developing metabolic syndrome by 25%.

Simple Lifestyle Improvements Can Reduce Heart Risks.

Using data from the UK Biobank study, researchers found that sleeping an additional 11 minutes a day, exercising for an additional 4.5 minutes a day, and making a dietary change as simple as cutting out one sugary drink a day or eating an additional serving of vegetables a day can reduce the risk of a major adverse cardiac event in the following eight years by 10%.

Nearly Half Kids Get Insufficient Sleep.

Nearly 44% of children in the United States do not consistently get enough sleep for their age, and research suggests that parents often underestimate their child’s sleep needs by more than an hour per day. According to the National Sleep Foundation, recommended sleep durations are: 12–16 hours (including naps) for infants, 11–14 hours for toddlers, 10–13 hours for preschoolers, 9–12 hours for school-age children, and 8–10 hours for teenagers.
