Navy seals have my highest respect, but why a coach would put their athletes through navy seal type training is questionable to say the least. Highly trained super soldiers have specific demands totally different than lacrosse players. Train to enhance your ability to respond to those imposed demands; don’t do random stuff that can get you hurt.

A dozen members of the Tufts University men's lacrosse team have been diagnosed with a rare and life-threatening muscle condition after undergoing a workout led by a graduate on Monday.

We’ve all heard the Spider-Man quote, but for athletes there’s a twist. When an athlete is blessed with size, strength, speed, agility or great reactive/have eye abilities, they’re only doing themselves and their teammates a disservice by not doing the extra to master their weaknesses. You can have a great shot, but have terrible conditioning, be strong as an ox but no lateral agility, or be an incredible physical athlete but struggle with hand eye fundamentals; working on weaker points in your game can be difficult, but also humbling and full of lessons. Learn to love what you hate training and you’ll master your craft.

Weight loss can be tricky and a tricky topic to discuss. With the new year approaching, most people that make diet/nutrition/exercise based resolutions create too many goals they have to follow immediately and for an extended period of time. This can be very overwhelming and lead to feeling defeated quickly. I’d like to share 5 easier tips to get started and stay consistent.

1. Week 1/ Drink more water. This doesn’t have to be half your weight in ounces right away, but start adding 4-8oz a day until you hit that number daily. This is something I like to begin clients with and only have them make this nutrition change for their first week in their weight loss journey.

2. Week2/Walk more. This doesn’t have to all be at once, but spend more time on your feet outside, in a treadmill, or around the house doing necessary chores. Try to build up to 30 additional minutes a day from where you’re at now.

3. Week3/Rest/sleep. Put the phones away earlier, keep your room dark and avoid any flashing or small tv/router/etc… Start with going to bed 5-10 minutes earlier a night and build up to an ideal time to get 7-9 hours.

4. Week 4/Start some resistance training. Most people think you need to spend endless hours doing cardio, but resistance training builds muscle which ups your metabolism and can be done using just body weight, bands or light weights to start.

5. Week5/This is the most challenging, but try to adopt the 80/20 rule, but do it by the week. Ideally of 80% of your daily nutrition is Whole Foods and 20% is snacks/wine/fried foods/etc… you’ll be making a lot of progress. Some days you might hit 60-40, others 90-10; if that cookie looks delicious, eat it and don’t feel guilty about it.

These 5 tips have one major thing in common beyond helping with weight loss; if done, they’ll reduce/remove inflammation in your body so you’ll have more energy and a lot less aches and pains. They’ll also improve your mental sharpness and mental health.

Feel free to share this with someone you know that is making fitness or weight loss resolutions this year or if you or a loved one are seeking additional help in your journey, I’d love to be of help.

Living Fitness and Recovery

Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) is an assisted manual stretch therapy technique that “The Stretch Lady” Ann Frederick created in 1995, that was further developed together with Chris Frederick, PT into a unique system performed with a client comfortably secured to a table. FST focuses on elongating, re-aligning and balancing the connective tissues of the body. The rapid and pain-free results occur within one session and not only improves flexibility but also strength, balance, coordination, body awareness and posture.

It is a fact that when you try to stretch yourself, you will never be able to relax enough or target specific areas optimally enough compared to a Certified Fascial Stretch Therapist working with you.

Instead of having a person try to treat themselves by taking yoga, FST is performed by certified therapists working on clients and patients to help them achieve their specific fitness or medical goals of reducing pain and increasing mobility after a thorough evaluation.
