The U.S. voted against a U.N. resolution to formally recognize the trans-Atlantic slave trade as the “gravest crime against humanity.” The U.S., Israel and Argentina were the only nations to vote against the resolution, which was adopted. Read more: https://nyti.ms/4mduz4d

Guatemala has decided to end oil extraction inside Laguna del Tigre National Park, a protected area within the vast Maya Biosphere Reserve. By choosing not to renew the oil contract operating in the park, government leaders signaled a shift toward stronger environmental protection. Officials said the decision focuses on conserving biodiversity while addressing deforestation and other pressures facing the region. 🌿🌎

Laguna del Tigre is one of the most important wildlife habitats in Central America. The park shelters species such as the Jaguar and the vibrant Scarlet Macaw, along with countless other plants and animals that depend on the rainforest ecosystem. Environmental advocates have long warned that drilling operations could damage fragile habitats and disrupt wildlife in the reserve. 🐆🦜

With oil production declining in recent years, Guatemala’s decision reflects a growing focus on sustainable land management and long-term conservation. Protecting the rainforest helps safeguard biodiversity, preserve vital ecosystems, and support the health of one of Central America’s most valuable natural regions for generations to come. 🌳✨

THEY TIED HIM TO A RAILROAD ENGINE… AND DROPPED HIM INTO THE RIVER

Mississippi.
1964.

The Civil Rights Movement was rising across the American South.

But so was the violence meant to stop it.

Charles Eddie Moore was only 19 years old.

A young Black man from Franklin County, Mississippi, full of life and promise.

But on a dark night in May 1964, hate came for him.

Members of the Ku Klux Klan abducted Charles Eddie Moore along with his friend Henry Hezekiah Dee, a 19-year-old college student.

Neither young man had committed any crime.

Yet they were taken, beaten, and brutally interrogated by the white supremacists.

The attackers believed—without evidence—that the young men were connected to civil rights activists.

The violence escalated.

The Klansmen tied the teenagers to a heavy railroad engine block.

Then they drove them to the Old Mississippi River Bridge.

There, under the darkness of night, the men threw them into the Mississippi River.

The weight of the metal dragged their bodies beneath the water.

For weeks, their families searched.

But the truth remained hidden.

Their bodies were eventually discovered floating in the river near Tallulah, Louisiana.

Instead of investigating their murder, local authorities quickly ruled the deaths accidental.

Justice was buried alongside them.

For decades, the case remained cold.

No arrests.
No accountability.

It was not until 2007—50 years later—that a Klansman named James Ford Seale was finally convicted for their kidnapping and deaths.

By then, generations had passed.

Charles Eddie Moore had been only a teenager.

A son.
A friend.

A life stolen in the shadows of hatred.

But history remembers his name—and the truth that tried to stay hidden beneath the river’s surface.
