Greetings UCCA members,
It is with heavy hearts and deep compassion that we share news of a tragic event that took place last Wednesday to one of our fellow UCCA members, Anne-Caroline. Her residential home on Conch Shell Drive was completely destroyed by fire, resulting in a devastating significant loss.
At the time of the fire Anne-Caroline, her husband Richard (Dick), Richard’s caretaker Sandra, and their two cherished family dogs, Bennett and Juliet, were inside the home. Thanks to the quick response and extraordinary courage of many— including island workers from Credence Construction, Tortuga Properties, North Captiva Barge Company, LCEC, UCFD, Davenport Barge Services, The Island Club, and others — Dick and Sandra were rescued, and neighboring homes were protected from further damage.
Unfortunately, Dick and Sandra have sustained burns and serious trauma. They are currently receiving care in the Blake Burn Center in Bradenton. Tragically, Bennett and Juliet, their family pets did not survive.
We extend our heartfelt prayers and support to Anne-Caroline, Dick, Sandra, and their loved ones during this devastating time.
The Upper Captiva Civic Association (UCCA) will be working closely with Anne-Caroline and on- island resources to coordinate a property clean-up volunteer effort once the property is cleared to allow the effort. The date will be announced in the coming weeks and we will share details on how you can help via Facebook and our website
We are grateful to every island neighbor and first responder who came together in the spirit of courage and compassion. This tragedy is a painful reminder of the strength of our island community, and we will continue to stand beside our fellow islanders in the days ahead.
With sympathy and solidarity,
The UCCA Board of Directors
