Merlene Johnsey
April 5, 1942 — April 4, 2026
Merlene Johnsey, born April 5, 1942, passed away peacefully, made whole and now resting in the arms of her loving Savior. In the weeks before her passing, she shared that she was ready to see Jesus—a comfort that brought peace to those who loved her.

Gospel music was one of Merlene’s greatest loves. In her final moments on this earth, it was the sound that calmed her spirit and carried her home.

She is preceded in death by many beloved family members and friends, including our “Big Bear Papaw,” Bobby Johnsey, and her daughter, Connie Mahaffey. Today, we find comfort in knowing they are joyfully reunited in Heaven.

Merlene is survived by her children, Diedre Cooper and Michael Parten, along with her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will continue to carry her love forward.

Merlene had a true gift for gardening. Her flowers were always vibrant and immaculate—it came naturally to her, as she truly had a green thumb. You could always tell the places she had touched, as they were filled with beauty and life. Her gardens were often visited by birds, something she deeply loved. It felt as though she created those spaces so she could enjoy the two things she cherished most—bright, blooming flowers and the gentle presence of birds—all in one peaceful place.

Now, every garden we see and every brightly colored bird that crosses our path will remind us of her.

Rest in Heaven, Merlene. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Funeral services for Merlene will be held Friday, April 10, 2026 beginning at 2:00pm at Wilson Funeral Home and On-Site Crematory, Carbon Hill. Visitation will be held the hour before the service, from 1:00pm-2:00pm.

Rodney Alan Vaughn of Carbon Hill, AL was born Thursday, April 14, 1966 and passed away Thursday, April 2, 2026. He was 59 years young.

Rodney loved to fish with just about anyone who would go with him. He participated in many bass tournaments throughout his life, and would gladly regale you with a tale of his epic catches. He also spent his early life playing softball. That love of outdoor sports later evolved into a love for bowling. Rodney was a champion bowler, scoring many perfect games throughout his bowling career. He loved the beach even though he didn’t get to see the ocean often. A mathematical wiz, Rodney always found symbolism in numbers. 11:11 was his thing. He never took life too seriously and was always ready to crack a joke. His claim to fame was winning a dance contest to “Money for Nothing” by the Dire Straights. While the last few months of his life were spent in pain from various health struggles, he kept his sense of humor until the very end. Now he can rest in peace with no pain. He will be missed by all who loved him.

Rodney is preceded in death by his Mama & Daddy Louise & Hoover Wright, mother Shirley Dozier, father Jimmy Vaughn, & brother Jerry Vaughn. Rodney is survived by his brother Jeff, as well as his four children Jasha, McKayla, Ashton, & Noah Vaughn.

His family will communicate details about a celebration of life at a later date.
