Informing families of where research and practice meet is an everyday task. I wish answers were simple and that parenting was easy. It is hard when claims are made that are not rooted in science and leave more questions than support for both parents and kids alike.

Politics are not intended in this response - only the scientific merit of the claims made.

The Trump administration ordered the Food and Drug Administration to tell doctors that using acetaminophen, an active ingredient in Tylenol, during pregnancy may contribute to an increased risk of autism.

Exploring the possibility of ADHD for a child can be complex, stressful, and overwhelming for parents. There are a myriad of possibilities and options. It can be helpful to talk to a psychologist to discuss a family’s unique experience and come up with an action plan that suits the child and family.

If a family chooses to include medications as part of the treatment plan, it can also be frustrating to find the best option for your child. This is a guide that I discuss frequently with families to support their understanding of the options that they can discuss with their medical doctor.

Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) find it unusually difficult to concentrate on tasks, to pay attention, to sit still and to control impulsive behavior. Stimulant medication has been shown to be the most effective treatment for reducing these symptoms. This guide explains...

Outside of seeing clients, I recently took on a project across the parking lot from my office where we have five independent psychologists and social workers who see adult and teenagers. I bought my office building and the one next to it and have poured hours and investment to make it an even more welcoming place for clients to be seen. I have some tremendous helpers and love hearing feedback from folks as we continue to update the facilities. As always, thank you for putting trust in me to support so many families in the region. I am looking forward to cooler temperatures, more updates to come, and a great school year for the kiddos who are back in action! Here are some updates shots of the “main office” with one before and after to start!

Great message and reminder.

New study! This is why I attempt to engage the family system in interventions both for kids as well as for adolescents. Outcomes are better when the caregivers are involved!

Psychological interventions for adolescents have shown mixed efficacy, and including parents in interventions may be an important avenue to improve treatment outcomes. Evidence from meta-analyses examining the role of parents in interven- tions for youth is inconsistent and has typically combined findings for both children and adolescents together. No prior meta-analysis has examined the specific role of parents in adolescent interventions as compared with interventions focused solely on adolescents across several disorders. To address this gap, systematic literature reviews were conducted utilizing a combination of searches among keywords including (parent * OR family) AND (intervention OR therap * OR treatment OR prevent*) AND (adolescen*). Inclusion criteria were (1) a randomized controlled trial of an individual psychological intervention compared to the same intervention with a parental component Parental Involvement in Adolescent Psychological Interventions: A Meta‑analysisverv

I find this to be a well written and explanatory piece regarding the autism increase and the complex reasons for shifts over time. We all want individuals to get support where needed and be appreciated as they grow into themselves.

The addition of Asperger’s syndrome to the D.S.M. had enormous unintended consequences.

The office updates continue for the building across the parking lot from my office. I purchased the building from Dr Kellogg a few months ago. He has been in this location since 1990 and continues to practice. I lease space to five other mental health providers which creates a great therapeutic space!

As a reminder, my office will be closed June 28th to July 8th for a vacation! Excited to take some time for some rest and relaxation after working on property updates most evenings and weekends. I am excited with how everything is coming along!
