Frank Caporali

Frank Caporali Jr., 92, of Carbondale, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 29, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Marie (Calabro) Caporali, with whom he shared a loving marriage of 67 years.

Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Frank and Josephine (Bruno) Caporali Sr. Frank was a graduate of Ben Franklin High School, Carbondale, and a lifelong, devoted member of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, worshipping at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Carbondale. He was a founding committee member of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast, where he generously gave his time over the years working many of the food stands and faithfully walking in the annual procession with the Blessed Mother.

A proud United States Navy veteran, Frank continued his commitment to service through his active membership in the Cerra-Leo Disabled American Veterans Post and as a faithful Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #7622. His strong sense of duty, faith, and community remained hallmarks of his life.

In his younger years, Frank worked alongside his father and grandfather in the family dry cleaning business for more than 30 years, where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for family tradition. He was later employed by Triangle Pacific Cabinets and the Carbondale Area School District, where he served as a dedicated maintenance man until his retirement.

Frank greatly valued time spent with family and friends and especially enjoyed trips to the campground, where many cherished memories were made. He was well known for his warm friendships, particularly with his longtime buddies at the Tiki Bar, and he looked forward to his regular mornings at McDonald’s, where he gathered with his treasured “breakfast club.” A devoted grandfather, Frank rarely missed an opportunity to attend his grandchildren’s sporting events and remained an avid sports fan throughout his life.

In addition to his beloved wife, Marie, Frank is survived by his four daughters, Mary Jo DeRichie and her husband, Michael, of Greenfield Township; Lori Lee and her husband, Joseph, of Carbondale; Anita Caporali of Carbondale; and Francine Newcomb and her husband, Frank, of Carbondale; one brother, Michael Caporali and his wife, Kathy, of Carbondale; seven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Anthony and Joseph Caporali; an infant sister; and his grandson, Frankie Newcomb Jr.

Frank’s funeral will be held on Monday, February 2, 2026, from the Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 2 Hospital Street, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish’s Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale. Interment, with military honors, will follow at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, SR 106, Greenfield Township.

Family and friends are invited to attend Frank’s viewing on Sunday, February 1, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joseph W. Waibel

Joseph W. Waibel, 69, of Carbondale, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, with his family by his side. His loving wife of 23 years is Peggy Wise Waibel.

Born in Carbondale, Joseph was the son of the late Edward J. and Cora (Kilgannon) Waibel. A 1974 graduate of Carbondale Area High School, he was a member of the school’s football team that won a Suburban Conference title. He dedicated many years of his career to working as a railroad engineer. An avid golfer, Joe was a member of a Wednesday night golf league with his partner of many years, Dave Andidora and greatly enjoyed the camaraderie of his morning coffee klatch at Lapera’s Gas Station. Joe loved frequent travels to various Caribbean Islands with dear friends Gary and Anita McDonough and their family. At the time of his passing, he was employed by JW Transit Inc., where he took great pride in serving as the bus driver for the Carbondale Area Football Team.

In addition to his wife, Peggy, he is survived by two sons, Bryan Jordan and his wife Brenda, Carbondale, and Sean Jordan and his wife Nicole, Mayfield; one daughter, Shannon Andidora and her husband Nicholas, Carbondale; one sister, Mary Miller and her husband Donnie, Carbondale; one brother, John Waibel and his wife Cindy, Crystal Lake; eight grandchildren, Courtney Owen, Madison Jordan, Shayne Jordan, Nikkia Andidora, Mikayla Jordan, Colin Jordan, Nicholas Andidora, and Braylee Andidora; along with several nieces and nephews and countless friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 12, 2026, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 74 N. Main St., Carbondale. A blessing service will follow in the funeral home at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Seth D. Wasnock officiating.

Born in Barceloneta, Puerto Rico, son of Jose Mendez and the late Maria Figueroa, beloved father, grandfather and family man, passed away surrounded by family. He cherished his time being surrounded by family and found his greatest joy at family gatherings and family celebrations. Whether it was a party or a family get together, always remembering together forever, always. He had a fun spirited side that many will always remember, especially his love for dancing, which brought smiles and laughter to family and friends alike. His legacy lives long in the strong family bonds he nurtured, and the countless memories he created with those he loved.

Jose is survived by his children: Christiana Mendez and fiancé Daniel Rosado; Alicia Guilford and husband Christopher; Jose Antonio Mendez and wife Alexia ; Jose Alfredo Mendez; Jose Alexander Mendez and wife Kaitlyn; siblings: Carmen, Joselito, Nancy, Alex, Iran (DJ), Minerva, Jesus, Jeffery, and Consesion; grandchildren: Brandon, Reggie, Christian, Alayah, Jewel, Alize, Sara Grace, Krystal, Regina, and Dominick; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Maria Figueroa.

Phyllis J. (Cicco) Coleman, 90, Carbondale, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at Allied Services Hospice, Scranton. Her husband, the late Edward W. Coleman, died in 2020.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Dominick and Catherine (Torchella) Cicco, she was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. Phyllis enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially when playing Bingo.

Phyllis’s survivors include a daughter, Maribeth Ciprian, Carbondale; a son, Edward Coleman and his wife Judy, Richmondale; a sister, Mary Cicco Kuper, Endwell; her grandchildren, Eric Ciprian, Mountain Top; Gino Ciprian (Kayla Fuga), Lake Ariel; Michael Ciprian, Pittston; Edward Coleman (Amanda), Browndale; Christopher Coleman (Jamie), West Chester; her great-grandchildren Mia and Liam Coleman; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Cicco; three brothers, Phil, Eugene, and Joe Cicco; and a son-in-law, Chuck Ciprian.

The family wishes to thank Commonwealth Regional Hospital of Scranton as well as Allied Services Hospice Unit of Scranton for their kind and compassionate care provided to Phyllis.

The funeral will be Monday, January 12, 2026, from Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 74 N. Main St., Carbondale, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Parish at St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Church St., Carbondale. Debbie Fay, 66, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026, at Dunmore Healthcare Center, Dunmore.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Johanna Battenberg and Thomas Kane, she graduated from Central Scranton High School and Lackawanna County Vocational Technical School with a degree as a licensed practical nurse. Prior to her retirement, she spent many years at Allied Services Developmental Disabilities group home as an LPN. She spent her career as a nurse touching countless lives with her compassionate care and professionalism.

Debbie served her country and was proud to be in the United States Army. She was known for her strength, courage, kindness, and generosity. After being diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma, she fought with that same strength, courage, and grace.

Outside of her career as a nurse, she loved to spend time volunteering as a Girl Scout Leader. She loved to spend time with her family and plan family trips. She loved to read and had a library of books in her home. She also loved to bake and craft. Throughout her 66-year journey of life, she touched so many lives with her generosity and selflessness.

Her grandchildren brought her so much joy and happiness and she loved spending time with them. We’ll remember her as the heart of our family, whose love and encouragement shaped who we are today.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Dunmore Healthcare Center and Allied Services Hospice for their care.

Debbie is survived by six children, Debi Fay, Valerie Kutch, Paul Fay, Danita Fay, Desirae Lee, and Brianna Fay; two sisters, Cindy Slevenski and Johanna Gotay; three brothers, Thomas Kane, Timothy Kane, and Michael Kane; 18 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Justin Ormes and her former spouse, Martin Fay.

The funeral will be Friday, January 9, 2026, from Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 74 N. Main St., Carbondale, with a blessing service at 9:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Inurnment will follow in Jermyn Cemetery.

John A Nicolio

John A. Nicolio, 97, passed away peacefully on January 2nd. He was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, caring brother, and loyal friend to many.

Jack was the beloved son of Augustine and Rose Nicolio, both of whom preceded him in death. From an early age, his faith played a central role in his life. His mother, Rose, faithfully prayed to St. Ann and brought him to St. Ann’s Monastery and Shrine Basilica as a young boy, planting deep spiritual roots that would guide him throughout his life. Jack carried these beliefs forward, sharing his devotion with his family and passing along the importance of faith, prayer, and tradition. St. Ann remained especially important to him and his family over the years.

Throughout his long and meaningful life, Jack was known for his broad smile, quick-witted sense of humor, contagious laughter, kindness, steady presence, and deep devotion to his family. One of his great joys was the game of golf, which he continued to enjoy well into his 80s.

Jack proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. His commitment to service extended beyond his military years. He was a 70-year member of the American Legion, Post 610, and a 63-year member and the last surviving charter member of the Mayfield Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his siblings Angela Tapyrik, Carl Savo, Josephine Johnson, Dominick Nicolio, Anthony Nicolio, and Parma Baggetta, and by his beloved son, Curtis Nicolio.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara Nicolio; his children, Johna Sedorovitz and her husband Ed, Glen Nicolio, and Leann Nicolio; his granddaughters, Tiffani Sedorivitz and her husband Noah Ungar of Colorado, and Morgan Sedorovitz and her partner Christian Holowchak of Pittsburgh; his sister, Irene Romeo of Carbondale; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to his special, kind, and patient caregiver, Kyra Aseline, whose compassionate care and loving presence meant so much and who truly became part of their family.

Family and friends may call on Wednesday, January 7th, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 74 North Main Street, Carbondale, PA 18407.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 8th, at 10:00 a.m. in Christ the King Parish at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, 624 Madison Avenue, Jermyn, PA 18433. Entombment will follow in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.

Jack’s legacy lives on through the family he loved so deeply, the faith he passed down through generations, and the service he gave so selflessly to his country and community. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

As we stand at the threshold of a new year, our hearts remain with the families who experienced the profound loss of a loved one in 2025. Grief does not follow a calendar, and the passing of time does not diminish the love we hold for those who are no longer with us.

James DeLoach Jr.

James DeLoach Jr., 60, of Carbondale, died Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at home.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware, son of James Edward DeLoach Sr. and the late Melinda E Barnes-Brugman, James was a history buff who enjoyed watching the sky and collecting his favorite things. He was an unconventional thinker with a lifelong love of learning that was sometimes misunderstood. Whether his curiosity led him to cooking, archaeology, or music, his desire to keep learning was something to be admired. Though he didn’t always express it easily, his love for his children was deep and unwavering.

He is survived by his father, James E. DeLoach Sr.; three children, Christopher DeLoach, Jean-Luc DeLoach, and Sydney DeLoach; a sister, Kathy Valley; an uncle, Rufus DeLoach; two aunts, Elaine DeLoach and Barbara Barnes-Butler-Ridgley; niece, Candace Wilkinson; nephews, Richard and Alexander Wilkinson, Seena Vojdani; cousins, Deb Brandt and family, as well as Derek Butler and family.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Melinda E. Barnes-Brugman; a brother, Richard Thurman Wilkinson, and a cousin, Brian Butler.

There will be no public services.

Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the care and direction of the Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 74 N. Main Street, Carbondale.

Gerald "Jerry" Chellino

Gerald “Jerry” Chellino, 65, Archbald, died Friday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. His wife is Kathryn Murnin Chellino.

Born in Carbondale, son of the late Gerald and Joan Sikorski Chellino, he was a wonderful uncle and friend. He was an avid Penn State fan; NY Giants and NY Yankees fan. Jerry enjoyed spending time with his special buddy, Sandro Schuh. Jerry’s wife, Kathryn and family extend deepest gratitude to: Dr. Dodge for years of care for Jerry; the nurses at Elan Skilled Nursing; the trauma team and nurses at CMC fourth floor surgical; Geisinger PCU fourth floor staff.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: a sister, Michele Chellino and Pete Larioni, Jessup; a nephew, Jason Kohut; special friends, Brian, Melissa and Sandro Schuh.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Parish’s St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale by Rev. Joseph Mosley, Pastor. Cremation will follow. The family will receive friends in the church from 9 a.m. until Mass time.
