An abdominal aortic aneurysm, or AAA, happens when the wall of the aorta, the largest blood vessel in your body, weakens and begins to bulge. Often called a “silent killer,” it usually has no symptoms until it becomes an emergency.

Risk factors include being over age 65, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of aneurysms.

Screening can save lives. Learn more about AAA screenings: sih.net/john

John is a retired medical professional from Johnston City. After a lifetime spent serving the Southern Illinois community, John knew that annual checkups are required for early detection.

Thanks to routine preventive care, his abdominal aortic aneurysm was found before it posed a serious threat. An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a bulge or weakening in the part of the aorta that runs through the abdomen. Left undetected, it can rupture and become a life-threatening emergency. Unfortunately, most AAAs show little or no symptoms until it’s too late.

After monitoring and treatment, John avoided an emergency and got back to what matters most: family fish fries, story-swapping with old friends and precious moments with his wife doting on their grandchildren.

Learn more about John below and visit www.sih.net/john to learn more about his care journey.

The Murphysboro High School marching band, Crimson Express, brought music, joy and energy to SIH St. Joseph Memorial Hospital during the Murphysboro Apple Festival!

Each year, this talented band visits to perform for our patients, giving them a chance to step outside, enjoy the fresh air and experience the healing power of music. For many, it’s a moment of normalcy, community and pure joy.

We’re grateful for this tradition that lifts spirits, connects people and reminds us all how powerful music can be.

On Patriot Day, we pause to honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001. We remember the courage of first responders, the strength of survivors, and the resilience of our nation. May this day remind us to stand together in unity and keep their memory alive.

On September 6, southern Illinois came together in two powerful ways to support su***de prevention and awareness. In Cobden, the Out of the Darkness Su***de Prevention and Awareness Walk, hosted by the Illinois Chapter of the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention, brought together families, friends, survivors and advocates. At the same time in Marion, Centerstone hosted the Life;Story Run and Walk for Su***de Prevention, where runners and walkers joined in the same mission: to bring hope, raise awareness and prevent the tragedy of su***de.

Every step taken in both communities carried meaning. Su***de is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, claiming more than 48,000 lives each year. But behind every statistic is a son, daughter, friend, neighbor, or loved one whose story matters deeply.

Both events served as moments of remembrance for those we’ve lost and as a reminder that no one is ever truly alone. Together, participants raised funds and awareness to support programs, education and resources right here in southern Illinois.

We were proud to sponsor these events and extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated, volunteered, donated and showed up with compassion and strength. Your commitment helps shine light in the darkest of places.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please know help is available. Call or text 988 for the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.
