Heat exhaustion occurs when an individual overheats due to prolonged exposure to hot weather. It can also occur when one engages in strenuous activity while in a hot environment. Physical symptoms of heat exhaustion could include excessive sweating, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, nausea, headache, and fainting.
However, the listed psychological symptoms can also be present during heat exhaustion. If you or someone you are with may be suffering from heat exhaustion, the following steps can be taken:
• Find a cooler place to rest
• Loosen or remove any tight clothing
• Apply wet cloths of fabrics to the forehead and neck
• Have sips of water (do not consume a lot of water at once)
• Seek medical attention if the symptoms do not improve
In order to prevent heat exhaustion, be sure to drink plenty of fluids (even when you are not thirsty), wear light and loose clothing during hot weather, stay in air-conditioned (or cool) spaces whenever possible, pace yourself, and avoid consuming alcohol or caffeine.
