Today, as we celebrate the Navy’s birthday, we’re honoring one of our incredible veteran residents, Wanda F., who served with resilience and pride. Originally from Akron, Ohio, Wanda was a trailblazer who joined the WAVES—Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service—during WWII, pioneering the path for women in the United States Navy. Wanda’s journey began right out of high school, where she started as a “Rosie the Riveter” in 1942, one of the limited opportunities available to young women at the time. Inspired by a friend, Wanda enlisted. She was later stationed in Washington, D.C., at Arlington Farmers California Hall, where she served as a Petty Officer First Class at the Bureau of Naval Personnel. Despite the challenging conditions and modest pay, Wanda persevered, gaining lifelong friendships and invaluable experiences. One of her fond experiences was riding a bike and was joined by a sailor who had a few too many drinks and needed a ride. Four months later, that gentleman became her husband, and they spent 26 years together.
Wanda’s post-war journey was just as remarkable, earning degrees in art and teaching, dedicating 20 years to education, and inspiring countless young minds. Today, we honor Wanda and all who have served in the Navy, celebrating the bravery and dedication that have protected our freedoms. Thank you, Wanda, for your service and for sharing your incredible journey with us! Happy Navy Birthday! ⚓️
