“I have ADHD and I love situations that I’m not expecting. It gives me a dopamine rush.” – 2026 Olympic Gold Medalist Alysa Liu

Kids with ADHD thrive on movement, novelty, and excitement—and with the right support, those traits become strengths.

At North Star Pediatric Therapy, OT helps kids:
• Build focus using movement and sensory strategies
• Improve emotional regulation and impulse control
• Strengthen routines for school and home success
• Grow confidence in who they are

We meet kids where they are—and help them succeed their way.

October is Occupational Therapy Month—and at North Star Pediatric Therapy, we’re highlighting feeding support and what families often call “picky eating.”

Not all feeding challenges are the same. Some children may experience typical picky eating, while others may be managing something more complex like Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) or Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID).

Pediatric Feeding Disorder can involve challenges with skill development, sensory processing, medical factors, or mealtime behaviors that impact a child’s ability to eat safely and adequately.

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder goes beyond picky eating and may include strong food avoidance based on sensory sensitivity, fear of choking or vomiting, or lack of interest in eating—often impacting growth and nutrition.

Occupational therapy can support children by building comfort with foods, strengthening oral-motor skills, reducing mealtime stress, and helping families create positive, pressure-free routines around eating.

If mealtimes feel stressful or limited, you’re not alone—and support is available. 💙

From attention and emotional regulation to coordination, sensory processing, and motor skills—different parts of the brain work together to help kids participate in everyday life.

During OT Month, we celebrate how OT supports the whole child—helping build the skills needed to play, learn, and grow with confidence.

April is both Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) Awareness Month and Occupational Therapy Month—these two can be connected in the work we do.

What is FND?
Functional Neurological Disorder is a condition where the brain and body have trouble communicating properly, leading to challenges with movement, coordination, sensation, and more. These symptoms are very real and can significantly impact a child’s daily life.

How can Occupational Therapy help?
Occupational Therapy (OT) focuses on helping children build the skills they need to participate in everyday activities—like playing, learning, and interacting with others. For children with FND, OT can support:
Improving motor control and coordination
Building confidence in movement
Developing coping strategies and routines
Supporting sensory regulation
Promoting independence in daily activities

At North Star Pediatric Therapy, we believe in a compassionate, individualized approach—meeting each child where they are and helping them shine in their own way ⭐

This month, we celebrate the strength of our clients, the dedication of our therapists, and the importance of awareness and understanding.

April is Occupational Therapy Month

Have you ever heard of interoception? It’s often called the “8th sense,” and it plays a big role in how children understand their bodies.

Interoception is our ability to notice and interpret internal body signals—like hunger, thirst, needing to use the bathroom, feeling too hot, or even recognizing emotions like anxiety or excitement. For many children, especially those with sensory processing differences, these signals can be hard to recognize or make sense of.

This is where occupational therapy comes in ✨

At North Star Pediatric Therapy, we help children:
• Learn to recognize body signals (e.g., “Is my heart beating fast?” “Do I feel tight or calm?”)
• Build connections between body sensations and emotions
• Develop strategies to respond appropriately (like taking a break, using calming tools, or asking for help)
• Improve independence in daily routines like toileting, eating, and self-regulation

When kids better understand what their bodies are telling them, they’re more confident, regulated, and able to engage in the world around them

As always, give your child—and yourself—grace. Learning to “listen” to our bodies takes time.

🐣 Real Talk About Holidays & Our Kids 🐣

If Easter felt a little hard today… you’re not alone.

For many kids with autism, routines are what help the world feel safe and predictable. Holidays? They tend to flip routines upside down—different foods, different places, lots of people, and a lot of “unexpected.” That can be really overwhelming.

So if your child struggled today, melted down, needed extra breaks, or just couldn’t do all the things… that makes sense.

Here are a few gentle ways to make holidays a little easier:

✨ Talk through plans ahead of time (even a simple “first/then” can help)
✨ Keep small parts of your normal routine when you can
✨ Build in breaks or quiet time
✨ Let your child have some choices and flexibility
✨ Know that leaving early or changing plans is always okay

Most importantly—

💙 Give your child grace.
💙 Give yourself grace.

The goal isn’t a picture-perfect holiday. It’s helping your child feel safe, supported, and understood. And you’re doing that—even on the hard days.

April is Occupational Therapy Month

Did you know pediatric occupational therapy can begin as early as infancy?

From the very start, babies are learning how to eat, sleep, move, and connect with their caregivers. When challenges arise, pediatric OT can provide gentle, supportive strategies to help both baby and parent thrive.

In infancy, OT may help with:
✨ Feeding & positioning (breast or bottle) to support a better latch
✨ Infant massage techniques to improve digestion, sleep, and bonding
✨ Early developmental skills and meeting milestones
✨ Sensory regulation and calming strategies

These early interventions can make a big difference in comfort, development, and confidence—for both baby and caregiver.

At North Star Pediatric Therapy, we’re here to support your family from the very beginning ⭐ Whether it’s feeding concerns, developmental questions, or simply wanting guidance, our team is ready to help.

📩 Reach out to learn more about how OT can support your little one.
