🌿 Meet the team behind The Living Room! Not just staff—people with real stories, real struggles, and real heart.

At Locust Street Resource Center, our Living Room team has grown into a 12-person crew of peer support specialists who bring something powerful to the table: lived experience. We've faced grief, addiction, domestic violence, homelessness, trauma, caregiving for loved ones with an illness, mental health challenges, reentry from prison, and so much more.

We don’t just understand crisis—we’ve been through it. That’s why we show up every day with compassion, empathy, and zero judgment. When someone walks through our door, they’re not just another name on a form—they’re a person we’re honored to support. They’re not met with a clipboard. They’re met with care. This isn’t a clinical setting—it’s a human one.

Yes, we do start with a short screening—because it helps us understand what you’re going through and how we can help. But it’s not about checking boxes. It’s about making sure you leave with support that actually fits your needs.

Whether you’re:
➤ Struggling to talk to a loved one about something heavy
➤ Feeling like a burden for needing support
➤ Unsure what kind of help you even need—
You can come here.

We’ll listen. We’ll sit beside you. We’ll walk through options together—from peer support and therapy to housing and recovery resources. No insurance, no pressure, just people helping people.

We’ve been creating peer-led support groups based not just on what we’ve seen and heard from guests—but also on what we’ve lived, and what we once needed ourselves. So far, we offer:

💜 Grief Support Group – Every other Friday at 5pm (Tonight!)
🖤 Domestic Violence Support Group – First Tuesday of Every Month
🧠 Mental Health Support Group – Launching August 3rd

And we’re not stopping there. If there's a topic or type of group you’d like to see, please reach out. We're here to create what our community needs—together.

Come as you are. Leave with a team in your corner who cares. That’s what The Living Room is all about—making sure you know you’re not alone. 🫶

Domestic Violence Support Group
Tonight | July 1st
6:30 PM – 7:30 PM
The Living Room at Locust Street Resource Center

This group is for anyone who is living with abuse now, has survived it in the past, or is walking alongside someone they love who is hurting and healing.

It’s a free, confidential, peer-led space where you can begin to process everything you’ve been through — the pain, confusion, anger, fear, and hope.

Here, you’re in charge of your story. You decide what to share and when — no rush, no pressure.

Together, we create a community where you can find understanding, safety, and the tools to start reclaiming control over your life.

You don’t have to carry this alone. Come as you are. Be heard. Be safe.

Let’s take the journey toward healing — together.

👉 Can’t make it tonight? The group meets every first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM.

Support for Caregivers & Veterans

We’re sharing two important resources available to families in our community—brought to us by our Caregiver Support Specialist, Michelle Savage, through her ongoing connection with Home Instead and local aging services partners.

🤝 Respite Care Services
Being a caregiver is tough—and everyone needs a break sometimes. Respite care offers short-term, in-home support so caregivers can take time to rest and care for themselves.
✔ Services available in Cass, Scott, Morgan, Macoupin & Montgomery counties
✔ Funded through AgeLinc and the Illinois Department on Aging

🎖 Veterans In-Home Care & Benefits
If you or a loved one served during wartime, you may qualify for Veterans Affairs Aid & Attendance—a monthly benefit that helps cover in-home care needs like bathing, dressing, and meal prep. Surviving spouses may qualify, too.
📋 Benefits based on military service, medical need, and financial eligibility

These kinds of programs make a real difference—but not everyone knows they exist. Help us spread the word to the caregivers and veterans in your life!

📞 Questions? Call (217) 245-9192 or visit homeinstead.com/545

We’re grateful for team members like Michelle who stay connected to resources that matter.

It’s only the second day of summer—but for many, it already feels like a lot.

Kids have been out of school for weeks, routines are off, and with this heat wave rolling in, everything can feel a little heavier—mentally and physically. If you’ve been feeling foggy, irritable, or just off, you’re not imagining it.

If you’re noticing an increase in symptoms and you take mental health medications, the heat might be hitting harder than usual. Some meds can make it more difficult for your body to handle high temperatures or recognize thirst—and that can sneak up on you fast.

That’s why we pulled together 7 summer wellness tips to help you stay grounded—especially when life feels flipped upside down and your mental health needs a little extra care.

We hope they help—and if they do, please share. You never know who might need them.

Let’s get through it together. 🌿

🌿 New Look, Same Roots. 🌿

We’re proud to unveil the new logo and visual identity for Locust Street Resource Center — a fresh reflection of who we are and what we’ve stood for since 1974.

Our new logo features a locust tree formed by a winding road — symbolizing the path we all walk through life’s challenges, transitions, and turning points — and branching leaves that reflect our commitment to meet people where they are in their journey, walk alongside them, and support them as they navigate life’s stressors.

This updated look honors where we’ve been while embracing where we’re going. We’re still here, providing the same trusted, compassionate, professional, and responsive care through our mental health, crisis, recovery, senior, and disability services — now with a look that fully reflects our mission.

Thank you for growing with us. 💚

🌿 Did you know that June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD)?

Today, we shine a light on the financial exploitation of older adults and vulnerable individuals—a form of abuse that’s far too common and often goes unnoticed.

📌 Here’s what you need to know:

🔘 Scams are targeting older adults
A grandparent scam, a fake emergency, a call from “law enforcement”—these tactics are cruel and effective. In 2023, the average victim of elder fraud lost $33,915.

🔘 Abuse is happening daily
Last year, the Illinois Adult Protective Services Program responded to more than 22,000 reports of abuse, neglect, or exploitation—that’s over 60 calls a day.

🔘 It often comes from those closest to them
1 in 4 vulnerable adults in Illinois experience financial exploitation. Many times, it’s at the hands of adult children, relatives, or caregivers.

🔘 This is a $28.3 billion crisis
Every year in the U.S., more than $28 billion is stolen from adults over 60—and nearly 75% of that money is taken by someone they know and trust.

🛑 You can help stop it.
If you suspect abuse, neglect, or exploitation of an older adult or an adult with disabilities (age 18–59):

📞 Call the Adult Protective Services Hotline at 1-866-800-1409—available 24/7.

In Carlinville and the surrounding communities, a lot of dads are doing the best they can with what they’ve got.

They work long hours. Worry about money. Try to show up for their families—even when they’re running on empty. And most of the time, they don’t talk about how they’re really doing.

Because somewhere along the line, they were told not to.

If you're a dad feeling burnt out, overwhelmed, or just plain tired of pretending you're fine—this is your reminder:
You're not weak. You're human. You're doing more than you know. And you're not alone.

You don’t have to carry it all by yourself.
Not today. Not any day.

Happy Father’s Day to the men who keep showing up, even when it’s hard.

—
And when you're ready to talk—we're here to listen. 🌿
