🩺 March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Don’t wait on what you can prevent.

Colorectal cancer often starts with no symptoms — but it can be prevented with regular screening.

Starting at age 45, there are multiple options available, including colonoscopy and simple at-home tests.

💙 The most important step? Starting the conversation with your provider.

🌷 This spring, something meaningful is growing in our community.

At Penn State Health, we’re proud to partner with Lebanon County Christian Ministries to support a community garden at the Lebanon Farmers Market that’s helping make fresh, healthy food more accessible.

What began with eight raised beds in 2023 has become a shared space where neighbors, volunteers and families come together — to grow, to give and to take what they need.

From tomatoes and peppers to herbs and potatoes, fresh produce is cultivated and shared with the community throughout the season.

💙 Because healthier communities grow through access, connection and care.

🩺 AI in health care isn’t all good — or all bad.

More people are turning to AI for medical answers — but these tools can sometimes reinforce what you’re already worried about, instead of giving you the full, accurate picture.

At Penn State Health, we’re using AI in very specific ways to improve patient care:

🔹During visits: AI helps capture conversations in real time so important details aren’t missed
🔹Behind the scenes: Physicians can quickly access trusted, evidence-based research
🔹 At home: Remote monitoring tools help track conditions like blood pressure — with programs helping many patients improve control

💡 The difference?
When AI is used by care teams, it’s guided by clinical expertise and reviewed for accuracy.

⚡️ E-bike and e-scooter injuries in kids are on the rise

As more kids spend time riding outdoors, doctors at Penn State Health Golisano Children's Hospital are reminding families about the risks tied to e-bikes and e-scooters — and the serious injuries they can cause.

In fact, providers have treated more children for these injuries in one year than in the previous three years combined.

“These vehicles may seem like toys, but they can reach speeds of 20 miles per hour or more, and the injuries we’re seeing are often serious,” says Dr. Bryanna Emr, pediatric trauma medical director.

Parents can help reduce risk by making sure children are old enough to ride, wearing a properly fitted helmet, staying off phones and headphones, avoiding sidewalks and roadways, and staying visible.

Hundreds of flashing lights and a powerful show of community support came together for this year’s Light Up the Night event at Penn State Health. 🚓🚑🚒

More than 100 vehicles representing over 65 organizations helped brighten the evening for children and families at Penn State Health Golisano Children's Hospital and Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Local law enforcement, EMS and fire agencies from across central Pennsylvania were joined by towing companies, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, Derry Township Police Department, Pennsylvania Game Commission, PA State Police and Life Lion to create an incredible display of support.

Thank you to every organization and first responder who helped bring a little extra light — and a lot of smiles — to our patients and their families. 💙

🧠 Shaky hands once made everyday tasks nearly impossible. New treatments are helping patients regain control.

Essential tremor causes uncontrollable shaking that can make simple activities like eating, drinking or writing incredibly difficult.

In the latest Medical Minute, Penn State Health neurosurgeon Dr. Pratik Talati explains how advanced treatments — including focused ultrasound — are helping reduce tremors and restore independence.

Focused ultrasound uses targeted sound waves to treat a small area of the brain involved in tremors, often without traditional surgery. Many patients experience dramatic improvement and can return to the activities they once struggled to do.
