Season 10 starts in 2 weeks and now is a great time to wash up your bikes and do a helmet and bike check before the season begins.

Bike check 101…
- does your helmet still fit firmly but is not too tight? Only two fingers should fit between your jaw and the helmet strap when properly fitted.
- check your tires for wear and that they are holding air. If running tubeless check sealant levels and add if needed.
- check your brakes: your brakes should stop the wheels without squealing or grinding. If your brake lever reaches the handlebars when pulled it may be time for a brake bleed and/or new brake pads.
- clean and lubricate your chain. Check chain for damage and use a chain checker tool to measure chain stretch. Replace chain if measuring between .5 and .75. If the chain measures greater than .75-1.0 it is likely time to replace the cassette and chainring too as a worn chain will wear those components rapidly and lead to poor shifting and chain drops. Tip: more frequent chain replacements can prolong the life of the more expensive cassette and chainring. A $10-$20 chain checker tool is worth the price.
- check your suspension: work the suspension and listen for any odd noises or stiction. Many manufacturers recommend an oil, seals, dust wiper service yearly or every 50-100 hrs to ensure proper operation and to prevent damage.
- check for proper shifting of derailleurs. One click for each change in gears is the goal, gears that are clicking or jumping from one gear to another are in need of adjustment and maybe a check on the derailleur hanger if needed.
- visually inspect the frame and check for any loose bolts or other damage.

Two wonderful seniors are spreading their wings this week and following trails that will lead them to many new amazing adventures.

Congratulations Emily and Jack!! You have both been a very special part of this team for many years (6 seasons!!) and always brought the fun and smiles to every ride and race. We will miss you both and wish you happy trails now and always.

The Pennsylvania Invasive Replace-ive Program is a new initiative that will give homeowners and others the option to remove invasive trees and shrubs from their property and replace them with native trees. Doing so will help reduce the likelihood of these species becoming unwanted “escapees” into neighboring properties, parks, and forests, and native trees help diversify the urban landscape.

Property owners are encouraged to remove one or more invasive species and receive up to (5) FREE, healthy, native, young replacement trees. Program events begin in May.

We had a presentation with Dauphin County about the impact of trails and why continued investment in them matters. SAMBA maintains 68 miles of shared-use trails, including Hershey Medical Center, Parkway Trails, and Rattling Creek- creating spaces for all that want to bike, hike, run, bird watching, etc.

These trails don’t just provide outdoor access—they drive tourism, support local businesses, and improve community health. The Hershey Medical Center Trail alone sees over 22,000 visits a year and generates $500k+ in economic impact.

We also highlighted the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Cycling League (PICL) and how important these trails are for getting more young riders involved in cycling. Better trails mean more opportunities for the next generation.

We’re working to expand access, improve safety, and secure funding to keep these trails going strong!

This weekend we wrapped up the 2024 mountain bike race season!! Jasper, Justin, and Noah battled it out against 100’s of riders from 11 states at the Eastern Regional Championships in Fair Hill, Maryland. You all fought hard and we couldn’t be more proud!! We can’t wait to see you all again next season! 💚🤍
