Effective Afib care starts with understanding the difference between heart rate and heart rhythm. They’re closely related — but they’re not the same thing.

Heart rate tells us how fast the heart is beating. Heart rhythm tells us whether those beats are coordinated and steady.

In Afib, the heart’s rhythm becomes irregular, and the rate often becomes too fast. Treating both effectively is key for reducing symptoms and future risk.

Current Clinic’s Complete Afib Care model brings together treatments that address both rate and rhythm, helping patients regain control of their heart health.

Atrial fibrillation (Afib) doesn’t always show up the way people expect. In fact, 62% of people diagnosed with Afib had never heard of the condition before their diagnosis.

That’s because for many people, Afib looks less like a dramatic event and more like everyday moments that feel a little off: Unusual fatigue. A flutter in the chest. Getting winded during activities that used to feel easy. Feeling lightheaded or drained for no obvious reason.

Because these symptoms can come and go, they’re often easy to dismiss. But together, they can be signs of Afib, a heart rhythm disorder that can lead to stroke and other complications.

Paying attention to these symptoms matters: Because when Afib is treated early, it’s possible to restore healthy heart rhythm and reduce long-term risk.

If these symptoms sound familiar, it may be worth talking with a healthcare professional about Afib and your options for treatment. Learn more at currentclinic.com.

Atrial fibrillation (Afib) is an abnormal heart rhythm that can lead to serious complications if untreated. But Afib doesn’t always feel like you might expect. Symptoms can be subtle and easy to overlook.

Here are 5 symptoms of Afib you shouldn’t ignore:

1. A racing, fluttering, or irregular heartbeat
You may feel like your heart is skipping beats, beating too fast, or fluttering in your chest. These sensations can come and go, and may happen even when you’re resting.

2. Feeling unusually tired
When your heart isn’t pumping efficiently, your body may not get the oxygen it needs. You might feel worn out more easily, even after a full night’s sleep or during routine activities.

3. Shortness of breath
You may find yourself getting winded doing things that didn’t used to be a problem — like walking up stairs, carrying groceries, or going for a short walk.

4. Dizziness or lightheadedness
An irregular rhythm can affect blood flow to your brain, leaving you feeling faint, unsteady, or like you need to sit down suddenly.

5. Chest pain, pressure, or discomfort
Some people experience tightness, pressure, or pain in the chest. This can be a sign your heart is under strain and should always be evaluated.

These symptoms aren’t always dramatic, but they shouldn’t be ignored.

At Current Clinic, we focus on helping people understand their risk, catch Afib early, and get the right care fast.

At Current Clinic, we’re proud to partner with physicians who have shaped cardiovascular care in their communities. Dr. Amanda Ryan is one of those leaders.

Dr. Ryan (DO, FACC, MBA) founded the former Advanced Heart and Vascular Center of New Mexico, now Current Clinic Carlsbad, with a clear mission: to ensure patients in rural Southeast New Mexico have access to the same level of cardiovascular care as those in major metropolitan centers. She built a state-of-the-art program from the ground up, rooted in clinical excellence, innovation, and deep community commitment.

“You don’t deserve a decreased healthcare experience because you choose to live in a rural area,” Dr. Ryan said.

Dr. Ryan’s expertise spans coronary artery disease, vascular disease, and complex cardiovascular conditions. But what truly sets her apart is her philosophy. She views care as a partnership — empowering patients, investing in her team, and creating systems that help people navigate complex care with confidence.

Her leadership extends beyond the clinic walls. From serving on community planning initiatives to supporting local health education and workforce development, Dr. Ryan has been instrumental in advancing the health of the Carlsbad region.

Today, as part of Current Clinic, Dr. Ryan is helping lead the next chapter — expanding access to advanced technologies, strengthening care pathways, and continuing to raise the standard of cardiovascular care. “Our partnership with Current Clinic is really going to take us to another level,” she said.
