If you’ve never had physical therapy before, here are some things to look out for. If you:
… spend only a few minutes with the PT before doing exercises unsupervised
… are set up with heat, ice, ultrasound, or other modalities for a majority of your session
… leave the clinic with more questions than when you came in
… keep doing the same exercises without any progressions
You should probably look for a new clinic πŸ‘€

While every physical therapy clinic and clinician is different, seek out the place that will give you the best quality of care. It makes a world of a difference on your rehab progress, mindset about your recovery, and even the duration of your symptoms.

Our biggest goal for patients at Valor Physical Therapy is to provide the best and most efficient patient care, so if you’re interested in starting your rehab journey with us, contact us with the information below!

If you’re looking for a physical therapist, here are some good signs that you’ve found someone that could really help you!

You may be in the right place if you:
- spend >15 minutes with the physical therapist
- are assessed and reassessed often by the PT to adjust the treatments as needed
- leave the session understanding more about your symptoms and diagnosis than when you walked in
- are given exercises/activities to perform at home that are curated for you and your specific needs

These patient care aspects should be considered when looking for a physical therapist - regardless of your location, PT setting, or injury. Physical therapy can have the potential to significantly improve quality of life, so look for one that will be able to provide the care that you need!

If you’re located in or around Carlsbad, CA, contact us to see if we would be a good fit for you!

Most likely, you’re going to see a PT because 1) the doctor told you to, or 2) you (or someone you know) know a PT and think they can help you! Many times, people seek help from a PT when the pain becomes debilitating - and even then, so many people don’t know HOW a physical therapist can be the key to getting rid of the pain for good.

Here are some signs that you should consider reaching out to a PT:
πŸ’‘your pain affects your ability to do daily tasks (or your ability to perform a task at home without compensating to avoid pain)
πŸ’‘ your pain affects your ability to participate in your sport (or your ability to perform well, causing you to change how you move)
πŸ’‘ you’ve seen the doctor for your pain and only ice and injections were recommended (or surgery… or even nothing was recommended)

Physical therapists should be one of the (if not THE) first people that you should contact if you sustain a musculoskeletal injury! We can help in so many ways, and most of the time, the sooner you see a PT, the quicker your recovery will be.

If you think you could benefit from seeing a PT, contact us below to see if we’re a good fit for you!

I was listening to a podcast the other day about tips for white belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - I had just started at a new BJJ gym in April/May this past year. The very first tip out of five discussed how important it was to have a PT to go to due to the intense physical nature of the sport. The speaker in the podcast, Bulletproof for BJJ, discussed how he wished he was warned about how demanding this sport can be on the body and how he needed PTs in his corner in order to prevent and manage injuries. While I knew that BJJ was a very physical sport, I never understood the extent of this until I started earlier this year. During my time at this particular BJJ gym, I’ve been approached by so many people who told me of their injuries that they sustained on and off the mats. However, these injuries rarely kept them off the mats; they merely pushed through the pain when training or tried to avoid using that limb/body part. This mentality seems to be very common in the sport, something that I’ve even caught myself thinking about (PTs are the worst patients). While it’s common, hopefully people participating in BJJ will realize how physical therapy can help them now and in the future.

As a PT, I really like that the importance of injury management was stressed during this podcast episode for Jiu Jitsu beginners. For any sport - whether it’s BJJ, pickleball, or backpacking - athletes are putting their bodies through incredible loads in order to perform well physically. Even with a non-contact sport like golf, the repetitive swinging and multiplanar movements can be very demanding on the athlete’s body. So if you’re invested in a sport(s), make sure to find the best PT for YOU, someone who understands/puts in the effort to understand your sport so that you can do the things that you love to do without limitations.

One of the most important things about returning to a sport after PT is also helping the patient’s mindset about their pain. Many times, patients are discharged after they reach a certain strength goal or once they are able to perform a movement task. However, fear of re-injury is a very common and very real feeling for athletes, especially if the injury has resulted in surgery. This can manifest as:

πŸ’ Fear of doing the same movement that caused the injury
πŸ’ Constantly thinking about the injured area when performing physical activity
πŸ’ Hesitation when loading the injured limb

As PTs, we help rehabilitate patients physically, but we also help with patients mentally and emotionally as well. We call this concept the biopsychosocial model - as healthcare practitioners, we treat the patient while keeping all three factors in mind. Biological (physical aspects), psychological, and social factors all play a role in a person’s wellbeing and health. Addressing the fear of re-injury will help the athletes at multiple levels in order to get them to participate in their sport without any limitations.

If you’re feeling this way, shoot me a dm and we can talk!
