How much can a compliment do?

Positive feedback can change the course of a team’s season or an athlete’s career. Compliments from a trusted teammate can turn around negative self-talk, make someone feel safe, redirect focus, and help them find their confidence again.

All of the benefits of compliments will return back to you. Make an effort to give meaningful compliments to your teammates and see the performance and culture shift in a positive direction.

Coach-ability: listening - applying - growing

These 3 steps are going to help you get more out of every practice, game, and interaction with your coach. With nearly every sport we have coaches. Learning how to receive feedback from them is a life lesson that will help you grow no matter the circumstances.

We have all had coaches whose style does not match us. In these moments we have a choice: shut them out or let them in. If you are dedicated to getting better, then I challenge you to let them in. With each piece of feedback you receive try to listen, change, and communicate. From there you can begin to use one of the most universal tools: take what you need, leave what you don’t.

As a college athlete, you will face adversity. Start with these two steps: accept what you cannot change, focus on what you can change.

May sound simple and obvious, but in practice it can be difficult. How often are you distracted by others opinions or performance, how much playing time you might get that weekend, or even a past injury that still looms around you.

Be intentional with your time, energy, and effort by focusing on what you can change.

Huge congrats to these boys for winning their World Series this past weekend!

It’s rare to find a group of 8 year olds that can take feedback, work well together, and train as hard as this group does! I had the honor of speaking with these boys right before their first game of the series to boost their confidence and bring the team together before getting after it!

So stoked for you all, keep brushing off those mistakes, staying confident, and being there for each other!

I was asked a really great question from one of the golfers the other day: What do I do if I get so nervous the night before a tournament that when I get there and it’s time to tee off, I can’t stop shaking?

So many young athletes put a tremendous amount of pressure on themselves. To succeed or to not fail. This pressure turns into doubts, fears, and what ifs that can play on repeat in their heads. For this individual is was a “what if I fail and embarrass myself” thought that was winning. We did a quick version of thought stopping which allowed them to see the truth in the situation rather than a fear created view of the future. Then we built a night before and pre swing routine for grounding and lowering his heart rate to help with the anxiety, racing thoughts, and shakiness.

I was so proud of this kid for coming and finding me during the rotations to ask this question. You can tell when an athlete truly cares about their sport when they are willing to ask vulnerable questions.

Always a good time with and the stellar camps they put together!

Last week I had the privilege of being a soccer coach again! Spending hours on end out on the fields with about a hundred kids. From the incredible staff, to gorgeous facilities at LMU, we had such an amazing week.

Something about working these camps always takes me back to pre-season days in college. Being in the sun, being with your team, and training like crazy. It takes a certain type of person!

Thank you again to Westy, the team at Next Athletes and , looking forward to next camp!
