Veterans Day at The Cottages of Carmel was a very memorable day! Together with the Visiting Nurse Association and Naval Post Graduate Officers we honored our Veterans for the sacrifice they paid to keep our country safe and free. All of our veterans received a United States Sealed Certificate signed by Congressman, Jimmy Panetta and a flag pin.
We are also very proud to say we have two veterans over the age of 100. Roland M. (Fighter Pilot) 101 years old and Anne R. (WAVE) is 104 years old.
We presented flowers to Anne R. for her contribution to the war efforts during World War II.
After the ceremony refreshments were served and lots of conversation between officers and our veterans.

We salute all veterans!!

Watermark University: Beekeeping with Jill & Greg Chadwell

The presentation began with the Chadwell's setting up the Club Room with all the supplies and equipment for their presentation.
The Club Room was at full capacity. They started with the history of honey as far back to King Tuts tomb 3000 years ago. Early hives were in dome shape baskets. Egyptians and Greeks were really into honey.

Jill & Greg talked about the anatomy of bees. Bees have three main parts. The head, thorax and abdomen. Did you know that bees see in color!
There are three types of bees. The Drone, Queen and Worker bee. It takes a experienced beekeeper to find the Queen in the hive. Bees build there own wax and work together as a community. A bee hive screen was then passed around for members to smell and feel.

Bees have influenced the fashion & business industry such as cosmetic products, perfume, candles and also in band-aids.
Bees symbolize mortality but has a life span of five weeks.

Jill and Greg shared samples of their honey, Sage, Saline, Wildflower-San Ramon, Wild flower-Carmel. Whipped Honey was used to make a delicious Honey Cake. Everyone raved over the cake on how delicious it tasted. This Watermark University was a big hit with all the members of The Cottages of Carmel.

The Chadwell's ended their presentation with a question and answer session. Very good questions were asked. When members were leaving the Club Room there was table set up with bee and honey souvenirs for members to take home. Coffee cups, plaques, pillows, books etc...
Jill and Greg went all out on this Watermark lecture!

Many thanks to Jill and Greg for an outstanding lecture on Beekeeping!
