How the disability community creates its own lifehackslife hacks, because they have to.
”Here is what does go viral: braille decoder rings, sign-language-translating gloves, “haptic footwear” for blind folks, stair-climbing wheelchairs. In other words, a preponderance of innovations, unveiled to great fanfare, that purport to solve disability-related problems. While the press applauds the tech sector’s forward-thinking and sensitivity to the needs of underserved populations, the concerns of disabled people—voiced again and again and again—are disregarded”

Caregivers and disabled people have been left to hack their way through a world indifferent—if not outright hostile—to their actual needs and desires.

Mibs McCarthy just brought this wonderful Unitarian Church prayer to my attention. Mibs is on the action committee for Friends of Rippling River. I hope you find this as beautiful as I do.

Dear blessed creator, dear mother, dear savior
Dear father, dear brother, dear holy other
Dear sibling, dear baby, dear patiently waiting
Dear sad & confused, dear stuck & abused
Dear end of your rope, dear worn out & broke
Dear go it alone, dear running from home
Dear righteously angry, forsaken by family
Dear jaded & quiet, dear tough & defiant
I pray that I'm heard.
And I pray that this works.
I pray if a prayer has been used as a sword,
Against you & your heart,
Against you & your word
I pray that this prayer is a plowshare of sorts,
That it might break you open,
It might help you grow.
I pray that your body gets all that it needs
And if you don't want healing,
I just pray for peace.
I pray that your burden gets lighter each day.
I pray the mean voice in your head goes away.
I pray that you honor the grief as it comes.
I pray you can feel all the life in your lungs.
I pray that if you go all day being brave,
That you can go home, go to bed,
Feeling safe.
I pray you're forgiven. I pray you forgive.
I pray you set boundaries & openly lived.
I pray that you feel you are worth never leaving.
I pray that you know I will always believe you.
I pray that you're heard.
And I pray that this works.
Amen on behalf of the last & the least,
On behalf of the anxious, depressed & unseen.
Amen for the workers, the hungry, the houseless.
Amen for the lonely & recently spouseless.
Amen for the qu**rs & their closeted peers.
Amen for the bullied who hold in their tears
Amen for the mothers of little black sons.
Amen for the kids who grow up scared of guns.
Amen for the addicts, ashamed & hungover.
Amen for the calloused, the wizened, the sober.
Amen for ones who want life to be over.
Amen for the leaders who lose their composure.
And amen for the parents who just lost their baby
Amen for chronically ill & disabled
Amen for the children down at the border
Amen for the persons without law & order
I pray that you're heard.
And I pray that this works.
I pray if a prayer has been used as a sword
Against you & your heart,
Against you & your word
I pray that this prayer is a plowshare of sorts.

Be prepared:
Firewise Defensible Space Homeowners' Bootcamp
Join us on June 12, at the Carmel Valley Village Fire House, 26 Via Contenta for a 90-minute session that will include information, demonstrations, and prize drawings. Due to COVID restrictions, attendees are asked to pre-register at www.roblesfirewise.com. We are offering three “platoon” times: 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m., 12:30-2:00 p.m. and 2:30-4:00 p.m. Tickets are free with a suggested $15 donation to cover the costs of the event; no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

The event will highlight a new defensible zone — the Immediate Zone, otherwise known as the Ember-Resistant Zone — which is from 0-5 feet from a house or structure. Two companies that specialize in home hardening will present tips and strategies that homeowners can immediately utilize to harden their homes, and a burn trailer will demonstrate the vulnerability of common attic/soffit/foundation vents. Relevant agencies and organizations will be onsite including:

Monterey County Regional Fire District
Monterey County of Emergency Services
Cachagua Volunteer Fire Department
Fire Safe Council of Monterey County
Community Emergency Response Team
Carmel Valley Garden Club
Ember Defense
Vulcan Vents
Robles Firewise Group

The community's generous donations allowed the Angel Project to also deliver Christmas Eve treat bags to each Rippling River resident, as well as gift each person there with a $20 Safeway gift card.

Dear Residents, be prepared to evacuate if necessary. Get your emergency needs at hand, medications, etc., and check in on your neighbors who may be mobility impaired. The Sheriff’s office has you on the radar due to the Cachagua fire. They will help to be sure everyone gets out safely if necessary, but be ready.

ABOUT FORR

Rippling River was founded as an experiment in independent living for mobility impaired residents. It was managed by HUD for years, and there were 3 hot meals daily, and staff who were there to assist residents. HUD divested of thousands of their subsidized developments late last century and in the early 2000s. Rippling River was then threatened with being demolished, and all the residents removed. The residents fought back, fearing they’d be scattered throughout the county and have to leave their beloved Carmel Valley. They rallied the community, formed the Friends of Rippling River, and the efforts resulted in renovation, and the residents stayed in place.

The facility is now owned by the Housing Development Corporation of Monterey County, (HDC), a private equity tax credit operation, with eligibility paperwork handled by the Monterey County Housing Authority. HDC contracts with the John Stewart Company (JSCo) for property management.

Residents have organized their own Residents Association, active for decades, with every resident a voting member, and meet monthly to organize fun events to get the community together - bingo, birthdays, music events, holiday BBQs, and potluck meals. They look after each other so beautifully when they become aware of any need. Little by little, resident access to the facilities has been decreased, with residents often locked out of their crafts room, the therapy room closed, and their Residents Association office commandeered by JSCo management. They have disabled parking areas coned off, and their community room is currently opened at the whim of management, blocking access to their food bank, library, computers, table tennis, pool table, and community meeting space. Their donated outdoor furniture has been tossed, and access removed to a shaded area for them to sit and enjoy their garden and the view of the valley hills. “No Loitering” is a house rule, with threats of eviction if violated. Friends of Rippling River remains active, with local community members working to ask the question: when low-income seniors and disabled folks finally find appropriate housing in our County, how are they treated? We work to assure they are treated with respect, work for open communication with management, and to permit the residents a reasonable voice in how the premises are managed. We bring community resources, seek grant funds, and coordinate informative and entertaining presentations. We manage an Urgent Needs Fund to provide some aid when unexpected expenses occur, with residents making every effort to repay on a workable schedule.
