Chronic inflammation has been identified as a causative factor and as a predictor of worse outcomes in many conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, bowel diseases, arthritis, cirrhosis, and metabolic syndrome, among others. In cases of chronic mental or physical illness (including chronic, persistent infections), inflammation can become chronic, which damages normal tissues. This damage produces damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) which cause further immune activation. Avoiding further immune activation and re-regulating the immune system is vital in PANS and PANDAS.

We have unfortunately lived some of these nightmares ourselves. As practitioners, the goal is to make sure other families don’t go through what we did.

We’re so happy to hear these success stories 🙌 Over 10 years ago, our daughter developed PANDAS, which set Dr. Scott and Dr. Ellen on a desperate search for the care she needed.

As doctors, we were fortunate to find the right help and convince our insurance company to provide desperately needed therapies that are too often routinely denied.

A decade later, Dr. Scott has written the first PANS/PANDAS medical text for physicians and created a comprehensive course for parents.

The classic criteria for diagnosing PANS/PANDAS are listed, but we have had more than a few patients present with “most” of the signs and symptoms of PANS and PANDAS without actually meeting all the strict diagnostic criteria.

The bottom line is that, if a patient has more than two or three of the findings in any of these groups of symptoms, there is a problem. They may not technically meet the criteria for PANS or PANDAS, but other neuropsychiatric disorders in children share some of the same root causes as PANS and PANDAS and have responded very well to our treatment approach.

This was an example of a hypnotic pattern interrupt on stage during Dr. Scott’s lecture .lyme conference

Our brains run on patterns — predictable loops of thought, emotion, and behavior. When you suddenly interrupt one of these loops in an unexpected way, it causes a momentary pause in the automatic process. In that “gap,” the person’s conscious mind is off-balance, and their subconscious becomes more accessible.
