IYKYK šŸ¤£ I once spent 2 hrs with the Loweā€™s cabinet guy, with the last hour not designing my cabinets but talking about his and his wifeā€™s health issues. Probably my fault for not shutting it downā€¦but thatā€™s the nurse in me! šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø

If you are seeing someone who only targets a portion of your primary care, do you think you are getting a whole person focused perspective? Or are you being sold something?

Hear me out. If you go to a specialist, then they are only going to recommend treatment based within their specialty. If they only sell supplements, be prepared to buy supplements. If they only prescribe psych meds, be prepared to be offered a psych med. If they only offer hormones, be prepared to walk out on hormones. See the pattern?

But there is so much more than one ā€œroot causeā€. I see this ALL the time.

ā€œRoot cause medicineā€ is a buzz word started by influencers and supplements companies to sell you something.

Does a tree have just one root? No, itā€™s a complex root system that feeds and nourishes the tree. And THAT is what we look at...the whole system of roots to help you feel your best.

šŸ˜” Why canā€™t they just tell us if the med is covered or not?! It really is a simple question.

Doing a ā€œPAā€ is not a simple task. First the med needs to be sent to the pharmacy to trigger the PA. Then it requires documentation of the diagnosis, an office visit note and answering a litany of questions. They generally take up to 20 minutes to complete and even more if the patient has not been seen in a while. Thus causing more delays for the patient, because most of the time it is determined that it is not covered.

As a patient, here is what you can do to be more proactive to ensure coverage.

When asking your insurance company for coverage, you should ask the following information:
1. Is this medication on formulary?
2. What are the criteria (diagnosis codes needed)?
3. How much is the copay if covered?
Please note, they will do everything they can to get you off the phone, so be persistent to ensure coverage is really what they say.

Getting to know my patients is a huge perk of being a direct primary care clinician because taking the time to know these details (even if not entirely relevant to the appointment at hand) is so important to building a rapport! The stronger the rapport, the better we can work together to improve your health!

šŸ¤£ just kidding, we are pretty darn good at our lab draws and try to make you feel as comfortable as possible. In fact I have a fuzzy blanket just for that purpose!

We conveniently draw labs in office to help our patients feel comfortable and at ease. Always the same clinician you see as well as for lab draws so you always know what to expect.

There is a level of comfort you get from seeing the same person each time and developing that relationshipā€¦even if they are coming at you with a needle. šŸ˜‰
