What to expect if your child has flu-like symptoms (fever, body aches, cough, congestion, decreased energy/appetite and potentially vomiting, diarrhea, rash, sore throat):
1. It’s probably Flu A. We are seeing a LOT of influenza A in our community right now.
2. We’re seeing a lot of kids with Flu who have fevers lasting 5-7 days. Sometimes the fever goes away for a day and then comes back.
3. We are seeing more rashes with flu than usual this year.
4. It’s not too late to get a flu shot. The kids who are the most ill from flu this year are mostly unvaccinated.
5. Tamiflu is only effective if given in the first 48 hours of illness (can shorten, not eliminate disease course) and is only recommended for high-risk individuals since it comes with significant side effects.
6. You can treat symptoms with acetaminophen or ibuprofen (if over 6 months old). We do not recommend cough or cold medicines for children.
*We know taking care of a sick child is tough. If you feel like your child is continuing to worsen after 5 days of illness, or if you are worried about other symptoms, please call your pediatrician’s office.
