We had an incredible time at National Night Out in Brewster on August 5!

It was a true pleasure connecting with over 53 community members and sharing our mission. We proudly helped 15 individuals learn about naloxone, a life-saving tool in overdose prevention, and distributed 22 Deterra bags to support safe medication disposal.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and to our hosts for inviting us. Events like this remind us of the power of education, connection, and collaboration in keeping our communities healthy and safe

Thank you Jay Bulding from Village of Brewster Police Department for the invitation.

"As you grow older, health problems or prescribed medicines may require that you drink less alcohol or avoid it completely. You may also notice that your body’s reaction to alcohol is different than before. Some older people feel the effects of alcohol more strongly without increasing the amount they drink. This can make them more likely to have accidents such as falls, fractures, and car crashes. Also, older women are more sensitive than men to the effects of alcohol."

Benefits of Exercise
Experts think regular physical activity can act as a healthy stand-in for addictive substances. That’s because exercise and drugs of misuse work on similar parts of your brain. They both activate your reward pathway, which triggers the release of feel-good chemicals like serotonin and dopamine.

We had an amazing time at the Putnam County Fair & 4-H Showcase this weekend! The event was bustling with energy, and our booth welcomed visitors of all kinds—both two-legged and four-legged friends.
Harmony, who lives with our very own Natalia, stopped by to spread some love, and sweet Lucy Loo made an appearance too—she’s still looking for her forever home!
Thanks to everyone who came out—it was a joyful day full of connection, community, and a few tail wags.

Supporting Healthy Choices in College

As students head off to college, they face exciting opportunities and serious challenges. Among them, underage and harmful drinking remains a significant public health concern. These behaviors can affect academic performance, mental health, relationships, and safety.

What Parents Can Do:
Your voice continues to matter—yes, even in college!
- Start the conversation early:** Ask open-ended questions about how your teen plans to navigate peer pressure.
- Be informed: Learn about campus policies and support services related to alcohol use.
- Stay connected: Regular check-ins can help your teen feel supported and empowered to make healthy decisions.
- Set clear expectations: Communicate your values and your hope that they’ll make safe, respectful choices.

Resources Worth Exploring:
- Campus wellness center or health promotion office
- Online guides from organizations like *SAMHSA* or *The Partnership to End Addiction*
- Community coalitions focused on prevention and safety

Together, We Can Make a Difference
When parents stay engaged and informed, students are more likely to thrive—academically, socially, and emotionally. Prevention begins with partnership.

Our Executive Director, Kristin McConnell, had the honor of attending an event today co-hosted by Governor Kathy Hochul and Congressman Pat Ryan. The event focused on the urgent implications of the recently passed reconciliation bill and shed light on how significant funding cuts will negatively impact New Yorkers—especially communities across the Hudson Valley and the state at large. These cuts are not just a budget issue—they represent a direct threat to the well-being of the individuals and families we serve. The loss of funding will likely lead to increased substance use, greater strain on emergency systems, and long-term negative outcomes for vulnerable populations. We stand with those advocating for access to care and are committed to amplifying this critical message.
