Happy Career & Technical Education Month! 🎓

Career & Technical Education (CTE) helps learners gain the skills, confidence, and credentials needed to pursue high-wage, high-skill, and high-demand careers. Through hands-on training and real-world learning, CTE prepares individuals to enter the workforce sooner, advance in their careers, and build long-term economic stability.

Throughout CTE Month, we’ll be sharing more about the benefits of Career & Technical Education and highlighting how ASPIN supports CTE pathways across Indiana. Learn more and explore opportunities to support CTE: ctemonth.org

This January, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has led a nationwide push to help Americans learn about the importance of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment—with the observance of SUD Treatment Month.

ℹ️ According to SAMHSA’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 48.4 million people 12 or older (or 16.8%) had a substance use disorder (SUD) in the past year; 27.9 million had an alcohol use disorder (AUD); and 28.2 million had a drug use disorder (DUD); and 7.7 million people had both an AUD and a DUD. The data also show that, among people 12 or older in 2024 who were classified as needing substance use treatment in the past year, only about 1 in 5 (19.3% or 10.2 million people) received substance use treatment in the past year.

SUD Treatment Month serves to support:
•People contemplating or seeking help for their substance use
•Practitioners treating or considering treating substance use disorder
•Friends, family, and loved ones of those with substance use

By raising awareness of treatment, including medications to treat substance use disorders, SAMHSA seeks to:
•Break down barriers that keep people from seeking help
•Encourage those on their treatment and recovery journey
•Promote best practices such as screening, intervention, and treatment of substance use disorders by health care providers

SAMHSA has resources to help. Visit: samhsa.gov/substance-use/treatment

Treatment works. 💜

As we continue observing Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month, it’s important to emphasize that evidence-based treatment improves health outcomes and supports long-term recovery.

Evidence-based treatment helps people reduce or stop substance use, improve their health and well-being, and rebuild stability in their lives. Recovery is not one-size-fits-all, and effective care often includes a combination of medical, behavioral, and community-based supports.

Access to quality treatment and sustained support strengthens not only individual recovery, but families, workplaces, and communities! Check out SAMHSA's toolkit: www.samhsa.gov/treatment

“Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve.”
— Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. King, whose commitment to justice, equity, and service continues to guide our work in advancing whole health and supporting communities across Indiana.

We invite you to honor Dr. King’s legacy today by reflecting on how you serve your community — and by continuing to lead with empathy, equity, and action in the work you do.

ASPIN is closed today, Monday, January 19th, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and will reopen for regular business hours tomorrow, Tuesday, January 20th.

January is Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month 💜
Substance use disorder (SUD) is a treatable mental disorder that affects the brain and behavior, leading to difficulty controlling substance use. Symptoms range from moderate to severe, with addiction representing the most severe form.

Treatment and recovery are most effective when individuals are supported by a trained behavioral health workforce. Community Health Workers (CHWs) and Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialists (CPRSS) are trained professionals that help connect people to care, provide education and support, and promote long-term recovery.

ASPIN provides CHW and CPRSS training and certification programs that prepare individuals to support substance use disorder treatment and recovery across diverse settings throughout Indiana.

Throughout January, we’ll continue sharing information about treatment, recovery supports, and workforce pathways.🔗Learn more about ASPIN’s training opportunities at www.aspin.org

Happy National Rural Health Day 2025! 🎉
Today we join NOSORH and partners nationwide in celebrating the people, providers, and communities that showcase the Power of Rural. Rural Indiana is filled with resilience, innovation, and a deep commitment to improving health and well-being, and we are grateful for everyone who supports this important work.

ASPIN is proud to advance rural health through education, workforce development, and community partnerships. ASPIN has been awarded $1,200,000 over three years through HRSA’s Rural Communities Opioid Response Program (RCORP) Pathways initiative. This funding will support a new behavioral health career pathway for rural youth in Kosciusko, Montgomery, and Owen counties.

Through this project, ASPIN and our partners will engage high school students in peer driven behavioral health programming, introduce them to behavioral health careers including the Certified Community Health Worker (CCHW) pathway, and bring Teen Mental Health First Aid to rural schools. At least 20 rural youth will earn their CCHW certification, preparing them to step into critical roles within Indiana’s behavioral health workforce. This initiative would not be possible without the collaboration of Bowen Health, Centerstone of Indiana, and West Central Indiana Area Health Education Center, along with local schools and community partners who support rural youth.

On National Rural Health Day, we celebrate rural communities and recommit to strengthening them through collaboration, education, and opportunity! 😊🎉
