𝗦𝗧𝗨𝗗𝗬 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧: Yoga Involvement & Mental Health in Times of Crisis

🧘🏻‍♀️ A cross-sectional study published in Frontiers in Psychology explored how deep involvement in yoga, beyond just physical practice, affects mental health during global crises like the COVID-19 pandemic.

🔍 Goal of the Study:
To examine whether the degree of philosophical and spiritual immersion in yoga (termed “yoga involvement”) influences psychological well-being, spiritual wellness, and distress levels, especially during turbulent times.

✨ Key Findings:
• Yoga practitioners showed significantly higher levels of spiritual well-being compared to Pilates practitioners.
• Greater involvement (regardless of practice type) predicted stronger psychological and spiritual well-being and a deeper sense of coherence.
• Interestingly, yoga involvement helped suppress the negative impact of yoga practice on sense of coherence, suggesting that how deeply one engages matters more than the practice alone.
• No direct link was found between yoga involvement and reduced psychological distress, but the overall benefits to well-being were clear.

🌿 Takeaway:
It’s not just about doing yoga. It’s about living it. Immersion in its teachings may be a key to resilience and inner peace during life’s storms.

𝗦𝗧𝗨𝗗𝗬: Yoga and Anxiety

___
🧪𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻
Participants: 226 adults diagnosed with GAD
Groups:
• CBT (structured talk therapy)
• Kundalini yoga
• Stress management education (control group)
Duration: 12 weeks of weekly 2-hour group sessions + daily homework
___
🔎𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀
* CBT - 71% Meaningful symptom improvement . Most effective, with lasting results at 6-month follow-up.
* Kundalini Yoga - 54% Meaningful symptom improvement. More effective than stress education short-term but not sustained at 6 months.
* Stress Management - 33% Meaningful symptom improvement. Least effective.

Yoga was significantly more effective than stress education in reducing anxiety symptoms after 3 months.
CBT remained superior at the 6-month follow-up, suggesting longer-lasting benefits. Yoga is safe, accessible, and well-tolerated, making it a valuable complementary option for those unable or unwilling to access CBT or take medication.
___
🧠 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
• Yoga may be a short-term effective tool for managing anxiety, especially for individuals seeking alternative or complementary treatments.
• Future research should explore which individuals benefit most from yoga, to better personalize treatment plans.
• Expanding treatment options can help reduce barriers to care and improve engagement with evidence-based therapies.
