The saddest news : Women's Camp is Cancelled for 2020 due to Covid 19.
Dear CYO Camp Community,
I hope you and your families are doing well during this unprecedented time. I have spent the last few days drafting and deleting and redrafting this message. I am trying my best to articulate what needs to be said, and to be honest I’m struggling. I have had the pleasure of being the CYO camp director for the past six years. During that time, with the help of countless staff and volunteers, we have revitalized the program, and we were set to have record summer in 2020. Then COVID-19 hit.
We have spent the last month repeatedly redrafting staffing plans, sanitation schedules and camper programs based on constantly changing guidelines. We were holding on to hope that there would be adequate testing and treatment prior to the start of summer camp. As you are all aware, at this point there is not. I consulted with all our health care professionals, the American Camp Association and the leadership of the Archdiocese of Seattle. With their guidance, we have made the decision to cancel summer camps this year.
This decision is heartbreaking for me as the director, but even more so as a parent of campers in our programs. My son has been so excited about camp. This would have been his first summer at resident camp. I haven’t told my kids yet, but I will tonight. Unfortunately, this will be another hard conversation in an endless list of hard conversations we’ve had as a family this spring.
If you were registered for summer camp 2020, you will receive an email next week outlining your options. If you are in the position to donate part or all of your camp fees, we would greatly appreciate that, as this decision does put camp in a difficult financial position. We are also more than happy to apply your funds toward the 2021 summer. We also know this is a tough time, and if you need a full refund, we are happy to make that happen for you.
I know you are disappointed. I’m disappointed too. This would have been our 70th season of CYO summer camps. However, we will get through this. I encourage you to do what we do: lean into your faith during these times.
Yours in Christ,
Shaune P. Randles
Director of CYO Camping
My personal video message to you
The Song of the Fire
We took a flame from a comet’s tail,
And added the song of the lark,
We gathered the velvet of darkened night,
And a child added part of its heart,
Some words were put together,
Told a story as life went along,
We gathered around a campfire flame,
And the world seemed to burst into song,
Oh the joy we’ll always be singing,
While the heart is young and free,
The memory of a campfire,
The beach, the woods and the tree,
I love the song of the morning,
Every hour is a song so true,
And as the day is ending,
There’s the song of the fire ever new,
Come be a part of this song,
Round the fire and the shadows of the nights,
For always when you are singing,
You will find all things are right.
