It takes a special kind of heart to advocate for others every single day. 🧡

As we celebrate National Social Work Month, we are proud to recognize Shannon, one of the incredible Social Workers who helps make Autumn Lake Healthcare at Southgate such a caring and supportive community.

Shannon is a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) with a Master’s degree in Social Work, graduating magna cm laude and earning program distinction as one of only five students recognized in her program. She also holds a minor in Gerontology along with a specialization in Leadership and Supervision.

For 13 years, Shannon has been a valued part of the Southgate family, serving as Social Service Director for the past 10 years. Her passion for supporting residents and their families shines through in everything she does.

Shannon was inspired to work in healthcare because she wanted to help people during important transitions in their lives. In sub-acute care, she supports residents and their families as they recover, adjust, and prepare to return home. In long-term care, she focuses on helping residents maintain their quality of life while ensuring they feel supported every day.

For Shannon, providing excellent care means treating every resident with dignity, respect, and compassion while making sure their voices are heard. Taking the time to listen, provide emotional support, and advocate for residents helps them feel valued and cared for each day.

⭐ National Long-Term Care Appreciation Week Spotlight ⭐

As we celebrate National Long-Term Care Appreciation Week, we’re proud to recognize one of the leaders who helps make Autumn Lake Healthcare at Southgate such a special place — our Administrator, Jacob!

Jacob recently celebrated 8 years with Southgate on March 5th, and during that time he has played a huge role in building a team and culture focused on compassion, teamwork, and exceptional care for our residents.

Healthcare has always been part of Jacob’s story. With a strong family background in the field, he was inspired by his father-in-law, who has been a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator since the 1970s. Jacob jokes that while his father-in-law’s license number is in the 200s, his is in the 3,000s — but he’s proud to continue the tradition of serving residents and families in long-term care.

When asked what he enjoys most about working at Southgate, Jacob’s answer was simple: the staff. He credits our incredible team for the heart and dedication they bring every single day. With so many longtime employees who truly care about our residents, Jacob says it’s something that makes Southgate a very special place.

Over the years, there have been countless memorable moments — celebrating staff weddings, welcoming new babies, honoring residents’ 100th birthdays, and watching residents come in needing support and leave stronger and walking on their own. Those moments are what make working in long-term care so meaningful.

For Jacob, providing excellent care means ensuring every resident is treated with dignity, compassion, and respect, while receiving the highest level of clinical care. It’s a standard he believes the Southgate team strives to deliver every day.

And here’s a fun fact about Jacob many people may not know — he can sing! In fact, he’s even performed at a few weddings over the years. 🎤

When asked who he would choose to have dinner with, Jacob gave a thoughtful answer that highlights people who have inspired and influenced him in different ways. His picks included President Donald Trump, someone he finds fascinating for his confidence and relentless drive. He would also choose his father-in-law, whom he describes as an incredible mentor with endless knowledge in both the nursing home industry and life in general. And from the work side of his life, Jacob chose Mark Schwartz, someone he deeply respects for his compassion and ability to connect with people, along with his Director of Nursing, Jaclyn Martz, who he says is an amazing leader whose energy, dedication, and heart for the facility inspire him every day.

National Dress Like Your Boss Day at Autumn Lake Healthcare at Southgate! 😄
We’re not saying our Administrator Jacob has a signature look… but when Nikki Bell and McKenzie Manley showed up dressed exactly like him, we had to do a double take! 👔
From the outfits to the “boss energy,” they absolutely nailed it. Safe to say Jacob might need to keep an eye out—there may be a few new administrators in training around here!

In honor of National Social Work Month, we are proud to recognize and celebrate one of the dedicated members of our team at Autumn Lake Healthcare at Southgate — Robert Robinson, MSW.
Robert has been a social worker since 1996 and earned his Master’s degree in 2000. With nearly 30 years of experience, he brings a deep sense of compassion, advocacy, and commitment to the residents and families he serves every day.
Throughout his career, Robert has worked in a variety of impactful settings, including juvenile drug and alcohol clinics, juvenile detention centers, prisons, adult day care programs, and a hospital cancer unit where he spent 12 years supporting patients and their families during incredibly difficult times.
For the past 8 years, Robert has been an important part of the team at Autumn Lake Healthcare at Southgate. His passion for social work is clear in the care and dedication he shows to residents each day. When asked what he enjoys most about his work, Robert shared:
“My favorite part about social work is being the voice for those who can’t be the voice for themselves.”
When offering advice to someone considering a career in social work, Robert says:
“Since I have 30 years of experience, I would say you have to get into it to truly want to represent the cause above function. The pay may not be great for the job, but if you have the heart and compassion behind it, it can be an extremely rewarding experience.”
