What Anxiety Is:
Anxiety is a condition brought on by an increased amount of the hormones cortisol and adrenaline (also called epinephrine) These 2 hormones are released during the fight or flight response to either perceived or real danger or stress held within from unresolved past traumatic events.
Adrenaline/Epinephrine causes the immediate physical symptoms such as a racing heart, rapid breathing, and heightened alertness. It helps the body react quickly in times of danger.
Cortisol is a longer-acting stress hormone that helps maintain the fight-or-flight response by keeping blood sugar levels elevated and suppressing non-essential functions like digestion and immune responses.
The Response, however, is a Natural Response
While these hormones are beneficial in short bursts, chronic anxiety can lead to an overproduction of cortisol, which can have negative effects on the mind and body over time.
It becomes a problem when it is out of proportion to the situation or when it consistently interferes with a person’s functioning level/abilities.
Symptoms include constant worry, heart palpitations, trembling tension, dizziness, hyperventilation and more.
Other health problems such as high blood pressure, depression, insomnia, appetite disorders, and digestive disorders can accompany anxiety.
Untreated or prolonged anxiety can lead to increased severity and panic attacks.
Some Root Causes
Stress, diet/poor nutrition, alcohol and street drugs, some prescription medications, neurotransmitter imbalance, thyroid problems and mitro-valve prolapse can all contribute to the onset of anxiety.
Many foods are known anxiety producers such as caffeine, alcohol, sugar and simple carbohydrates.
