WHAT'S GOING AROUND?— Each week, we ask our ER physicians what ailments and conditions are commonly being seen in our Emergency Room.

THIS WEEK, Dr. Matthew Steck, an emergency physician with McLaren, reports:

Respiratory complaints
Environmental conditions have caused a spike in the volume of patients seeking care for respiratory distress, such as asthma or COPD exacerbation.

Injuries
The beginnings of high school and youth sports have continued the summer-ling trend of patients seeking treatment for orthopedic and soft tissue injuries.

Viral activity
After a couple of weeks of noticeable volumes of upper respiratory and gastrointestinal viral infections, there has been a significant drop in patient infections.

Water safety
During these last few weeks of summer, the ER team would like to offer a quick reminder to take extra caution when in and around water to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.

WHAT'S GOING AROUND?— Each week, we ask our ER physicians what ailments and conditions are commonly being seen in our Emergency Room.

THIS WEEK, Dr. Erin Cuddeback, an emergency physician with McLaren, reports:

Injuries
While it has been the most common condition treated in the emergency department throughout the summer, there has been a noticeable uptick in the volume of orthopedic and soft tissue injuries with the beginning of fall sports practices.

Lung condition exacerbation
Air quality issues may have been a significant factor in the rise in patients seeking treatment for breathing complications stemming from a lung condition, such as asthma or COPD.

Viral conditions
Though not reported in high volumes, there remains a steady but low level of viral activity, specifically upper respiratory infections and gastroenteritis.

THIS WEEK, Dr. Ali Saad, an emergency physician at McLaren reports:

Injuries
Orthopedic and soft tissue injuries sustained during outdoor activities continue to be the most common reason patients are seeking care in the emergency and trauma center. There has been a noticeable increase in the volume of elderly patients injured in falls.

Asthma
Allergies have caused asthma sufferers to experience exacerbated symptoms, with the most severe cases causing significant breathing complications.

Gastro
Continuing the trend throughout the summer, there has been a steady, though low level, volume of patients experiencing gastrointestinal distress.
